On 5 December the king of Thailand celebrated his 80th birthday. Although the monarch has no real power, he is loved by the population. His birthday is a national holiday in the country. In order to show their respect towards the ruler, the citizens of Thailand close all shops, bars and places of entertainment on this day. "On Wednesday we celebrate our national holiday, and all bars, places of entertainment and massage salons shall be closed. Sex and alcohol are prohibited on this day, and observance of this rule is strictly monitored", the door-keeper of one of the brothels of Rattan said.

Pink shirts are extremely popular in Thailand these days. Not long ago the king left the hospital in a pink shirt, and since then hundreds of his nationals are queuing in front of the clothing stores. Only one retail chain "Phufa" has sold 40 thousand pink shirts since the beginning of November.
Due to health problems the king spent three weeks in hospital in October. On leaving the hospital he put on pink clothes, although as a rule he wears dark clothes in public. The choice of the color was not occasional. In the beginning of the year, the astrologers recommended the king to wear pink clothes which would contribute to good health. Taking into account these considerations, the coat-of-arms designed for the king's 80th anniversary celebrated on 5 December is also made in pink colors. The pink boom is not the first fashion "fever" caused by the king of Thailand. Since the year of 2006, when he celebrated the 60th anniversary of his reign, many of his nationals wear bright yellow clothes, however, not every day but only on Mondays, since Pumipon was born on Monday.
