7 Tips For Breastfeeding In Public

Breastfeeding your child should be seen as an equivalent to you having your meals. Just as your meal times and daily schedules aren’t limited to your house, so shouldn’t your baby’s. There is as it is a mountain of stress and anxiety that new moms have to deal with. In which case, breastfeeding as a commitment shouldn’t come as a stressful chore.

The current pediatric advice is to breastfeed your baby exclusively for 6 months.

Although the first few days require you to start your nursing journey in a set up most comfortable for you, you should gradually be able to do it wherever and whenever the need arises.

Whether you are a first-time mom or a seasoned breastfeeding veteran, it can be intimidating to nurse in public. The comfort takes some time to develop, even when you have the support of your community.

If you're feeling anxious about it, then these tips might be helpful at hand.

1. Plan Ahead:

Taking the previous point ahead, finding the right feeding spot becomes much easier when you plan ahead. Make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable breastfeeding session including extra diapers, wipes, burp cloths, and a pacifier. You’ll also want to make sure your baby is hungry, so that you can start the feeding session right away. There are several feeding rooms in malls and hotels. Even when it comes to eating out, you can ask your reservation manager to reserve you a spot that can be nursing-friendly. Having a plan of action in mind can save you and your baby fuss and time.

2. Find the right Spot:

This is really imperative. Not just for privacy reasons, but because a lot of hustle and bustle can really be distracting for the baby in the middle of a nursing session. Add to that you would need a setting where you can comfortably be seated and can relax your back. It’s important to find a comfortable place to breastfeed in public. Look for areas that are quiet and provide some privacy, such as a corner of a park, a corner of a cafe, or a nursing room in a mall. If you’re in a place that doesn’t have a designated breastfeeding area, you can always create a makeshift one by using a blanket or a nursing cover.

3. Choose Comfortable Clothing:

Nursing garments and outfits with concealed openings can be bought or handmade for easier breastfeeding. You can also create nursing outfits with everyday attire. A loose-fitting top is great for casual situations.

They are structured perfectly for you to be able to nurse confidently without having to worry about unnecessary exposure. You could alternatively wear buttoned shirts with a camisole inside as the perfect hack to feed and have the extra fabric cover you without hampering the child’s airway.

4. Nursing Covers:

An essential accessory for breastfeeding mothers. Necessary for providing privacy and comfort, these covers prevent your baby from getting distracted when you feed in public. With breathable and soft fabric and adequate coverage, you can breastfeed at your convenience. Don't underestimate the importance of nursing covers!

5. Turn Away to Latch:

The only chance where the skin can prominently show during the feeding sessions is when the baby is latching and unlatching. In such scenarios it is best to face away momentarily and return to position once the latch is done. For example, if you are at a restaurant then you can turn your face to the wall to quickly latch your baby and do the same when you have to unlatch.

6. Be Confident:

Finally, be confident in your decision to breastfeed in public and don’t worry about what other people think. You’re providing your baby with the best nutrition possible, and you don’t have to apologize for it. Absolutely no one within their legal rights can ever ask a mom to not nurse in public. All that you need to care about is your comfort and that of your child. Be prepared to respond sternly and affirmatively if and when a stranger raises the question.

7. Avoid the Loos:

Just as you wouldn’t be sitting in a public washroom and having your meal, please abstain your child from doing so. There are germs and infections that you wouldn’t want around your child. Not just for them, it can lead to infections in you as well. Therefore, keep looks at bay when you are planning to nurse your child.

Breastfeeding your baby takes time and patience. There is no additional need to make public feeding a stressful chore. The right clothes, nursing accessories and pre planning your feeding sessions will help you and your baby is at ease. We hope these tips help you and your baby enjoy your day out and about fuss free!
