What you should know about Staffords according to Veterinarian Piet

The Stafford and the Stafford crosses generally do not always have a good name and image. They are often labeled as aggressive, but Veterinarian Piet Hellemans disagrees. He explains why this dog can be very sweet and tells you everything you need to know about this breed.

Veterinarian Piet Hellemans says that the Stafford and all crosses with the Stafford often end up in animal shelters and are often rarely adopted. The dog breed is often thought of as a fighting dog or reminiscent of pit bull, which people often find intimidating and scary.

According to vet Piet, this is unjustified. He says that this breed was bred long ago as a fighting dog, guard dog and hunting dog. In the past they have been used a lot for dog fighting. Fortunately, in the 19th century, this was banned for good in most areas of the world. In the meantime, the Stafford - or a cross of it - has become a very cheerful, sweet and cozy house dog.

Piet also says that all animals can bite, including dogs. Whether it's a poodle, dachshund or a stafford, it doesn't matter.

Stafford character

The character traits of the Stafford are energetic and they also have a bit of a megalomania. These dogs need a lot of exercise and challenge. They are dogs that you have to work with a lot. When you give them a lot of exercise, you really are their big hero! If you give your dog a lot of exercise or often throw a stick or ball, this greatly increases the relationship between dog and owner.

Behavior

'The Stafford therefore has a lot of energy that needs to be released,' says vet Piet. 'As soon as that energy remains bottled up, they can start enjoying themselves, but this often manifests itself in behavioral problems or things we don't want them to do. For this reason, people often place these dogs in shelters.'

The bad image makes people think that these dogs are not cuddly, but this is not the case. You can prevent this behavior by giving the Stafford plenty of exercise.

Pete's advice

Piet says that it is important for every new owner with a new dog to take a dog course, such as an obedience course.

So a stafford is really not always as the image suggests. Remember: a course is always important - with any dog - and make sure you can give the Stafford all the exercise it needs!

Adopt Biggie?

Biggie - the dog that came with Piet to the farm - is a young dog of 1 year old. The breed is a cross between a Stafford and a Labrador. At the moment Biggie is in his adolescent phase. This means that he is very curious and likes to explore.

Biggie was neglected as a puppy and then spent 8 months in an animal shelter. He then went to a shelter and was adopted by a very sweet owner, but as it turned out, Biggie is not good with cats so unfortunately this was not the right match.

Piet therefore advises Biggie's new owner to take a dog course with him anyway, because it is still a young dog and he still has a lot to learn. But such a dog course is also very instructive for the new owner - you learn to live a dog according to the new insights and to be consistent.

This super sweet dog needs a nice home as soon as possible where he can lose his energy and receive lots of love!
