UK-SPEC EngTech Requirements For Professional Registration

The UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment (UK-SPEC) explains the eligibility criteria that an individual needs to satisfy to become registered as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Engineering Technician (EngTech).

In addition, UK-SPEC has activity examples that demonstrate the necessary competency and commitment.

Each registration status mentioned above needs that the candidate demonstrates five broad areas (below) of commitment and competence:

·       Knowledge and understanding

·       Design, development and coping with engineering problems

·       Professional Commitment

·       Management, responsibility and leadership

·       Communication and interpersonal skills

EngTech (Engineering Technician):

Professionals working as Engineering Technicians make use of proven techniques and procedures to deal with practical engineering issues.

An Engineering Technician needs to apply safe systems of work and be able to demonstrate:

·       That they paid contribution to either the design, development, commissioning, manufacture, operation, decommissioning or maintaining equipment, products, service or processes

·       Influential interpersonal skills for communication about technical matters

·       Supervisory or technical responsibility

·       Commitment to professional engineering values

If you think that you can demonstrate these things, you should apply for the EngTech title, which will help you get your professionalism recognized.

Eligibility criteria:

Anybody who is capable of demonstrating the required professional competences and commitment can apply for the EngTech registration.

Generally, a candidate will have successfully completed some work-based learning programme or an Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship approved by their professional engineering institution. It can result directly in Engineering Technician (EngTech) professional registration.

Or, along with appropriate work experience, they will have:

A qualification, with approval from a licensed professional engineering institution, in engineering or construction set at level 3 (or higher) in the Qualifications and Credit Framework/National Qualifications Framework for England and Northern Ireland; or at level 6 (or higher) in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework; or at level 3 (or higher) in the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales;

Or equal qualifications allowed by a licensed professional engineering institution.

An individual who doesn’t have formal qualifications may also apply for EngTech registration by showing that they have attained the necessary competence through substantial work experience.

UK-SPEC offers details of the capability required for professional registration as EngTech. Institution staff will give you advice and support throughout the registration process.

Top three major benefits of UK-SPEC professional registration:

Improved career prospects:

Professional registration shows that you have and are committed to improving and maintaining the knowledge, skills and competence necessary to fulfill the engineering and technological requirements of today.

This title will add more value to your CV, which may lead to wider employment options, promotion and career progression.

Higher self-esteem:

Respondents to the Engineering Council’s registrant surveys repeatedly report improved status and the major driver to getting professionally registered. Professional registration is achieved by virtue of peer recognition of capability and commitment to society, the profession and the environment. It gives birth to a sense of attainment, credibility with colleagues and students and respect from broader industry, and it also boosts the self-esteem and confidence of many individuals.

Expertise proof:

Professional registration will be the most influential proof for employers, peers and the public that you have given a huge number of years to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding within your field and have clearly shown UK-SPEC competencies and commitment.
