The Best Summer Activities To Get Children Outdoors

Math camps, like kids’ summer camps Harvard are meant to encourage children to get outside and engage in outdoor math activities. These math activities offer students the chance to get outdoors and have some fun whilst practising math skills. Teachers, parents and camping counselors can use outdoor activities to keep children engaged and learning math.

Overall, it is important to have fun and celebrate children’s success.

Here are some summer activities that will help your children move and keep them learning math. This list includes various outdoor activities that can be implemented during a summer camp when children are not in school or if you are teaching an outdoor summer math activity to your children.

Chalk number line run

Sidewalk chalk is a very popular resource for children, especially children in younger grades. It can be utilized for hopscotch math, drawing a picture or spelling sight words. Hopscotch is an outdoor game that will be drawn using sidewalk chalk. It can be used in numerous educational ways. It also allows for kinesthetic learning because children are required to move and hop around.

Another good sidewalk chalk activity is a chalk number line run. The number line is a useful tool that helps with solving math problems and increases the number sense. You can use the chalk to draw a number line to twenty. Place a stack of number cards close to the line and have the children take turns drawing a number card. When the number 3 is drawn, the player hops three times. Players will rotate drawing cards and counting until when someone reaches the end. This is a simple activity to do during math summer camps.

Sort and measure sticks

When children are not in school during the summer, this is a great activity to do. The game is self-explanatory. You just have to find sticks and measure them. Kids may use small bags, containers or a basket to carry the sticks. You can begin the game by telling the students they have x amount of time to find as many sticks as possible. You can use a phone or a stopwatch to set a timer. The players will be very busy gathering sticks of different sizes and shapes.

Once the timer is finished, students will come together and put down their sticks, arranging them from the shortest to the longest. Teachers who are facilitating these summer math activities can extend students’ thinking by asking them to sort the sticks accordingly. They should therefore compare their lengths to one another.

Math fact basketball

This is another way to implement summer math activities into the summer learning of children. This is an outdoor summer activity that will allow kinesthetic movements. This activity can be adjusted to meet the children’s educational needs.

To play this game at summer camps Harvard, you will either need to facilitate it and call out mathematical equations or you will have math equations written down on index cards for students to draw. To start playing, a player will draw a math equation and answer the equation aloud as quickly as possible. When they successfully solve the problem, they will get a chance to shoot a basketball. The player will collect two points if they answer correctly and shoot the ball into the hoop.
