  • Slowly add the sulfur dioxide gas to the flask with vigorous stirring. The reaction between iodine and sulfur dioxide will produce iodine monochloride, which is a key intermediate in the formation of the final reagent.


  • Keep stirring the mixture until all of the iodine has dissolved and the solution becomes clear. The solution will have a yellow colour due to the presence of iodine monochloride.


  • Once the iodine has dissolved, add the base component, typically pyridine or imidazole. The base is added to the solution to scavenge the hydrogen ions produced during the reaction between iodine and water, allowing the reaction to continue until all the water is consumed.


  • The final solution is a Karl Fischer reagent that can be used for water determination in a variety of samples.
