Leadership In Children

Innate leadership qualities may help children become good leaders, but training and experience also help in lifelong success. Fortunately, parents can play a crucial role in developing leadership in children.

Building a meaningful and content life demands the ability to influence, engage, and inspire others around you. Teaching kids leadership skills is integral in enabling them to become successful, responsible individuals and helping them create a supportive network around them.

Do Individuals Possess Inherent Leadership Qualities?

Many people wonder if leadership can be taught or if some are born leaders. Research has concluded that these are some common qualities possessed by leaders:

  • They get motivated by achievements.
  • They set goals and take accountability for their actions.
  • They possess a significant amount of mental and physical energy.
  • They are confident in their skin and believe in themselves.
  • They plan and execute strategically.
  • They are prepared for potential obstacles.
  • They instill high morals and behave according to their values.
  • They are flexible and adapt according to their environment and needs.

Here are some ways through which you can develop leadership in your children.

Let Them Choose

The first step in developing leadership skills involves believing your children can choose the best for themselves while providing appropriate guidance. For instance, allowing them to choose between snacks, what they want to wear, etc., because they must be comfortable making choices as they age. Moreover, they need to be okay with being accountable for their choices and their consequences.

Encourage Teamwork

Leadership qualities in children can be developed quickly and effectively through teamwork. Making them participate in a team-centric curriculum and helping out with chores can improve their communication, problem-solving, cooperation, and social skills. Kids employ their natural talents through teamwork to accomplish the end goal. Working with a team accurately reveals their natural talents and areas where they lack.

Let's take an example from Mr. Who's Remarkable Expeditions, where John, aka Mr. Who helped his team win the soccer game by analyzing their weaknesses and using his newfound insight into the importance of a cohesive unit.

Encourage Perseverance

Being able to persevere and overcome challenges is the secret to success in relationships and accomplishments. For instance, kids might struggle with doing a math problem, but if they continue to practice, they will eventually be able to grasp the concept. Teaching children to keep trying instead of just shooting for the win is essential for future success. Perseverance is a crucial leadership skill since it sets the foundation for other skill acquisition.

Volunteering

Volunteering provides kids with a new perspective. Children are curious by nature and likely to ask a lot of questions. This fosters creative thinking relating to real-life issues. It also teaches kids to be of service. A great leader is focused on a cause or their people, so if you want to know how to raise a leader, teach them how to help others.

There are multiple other ways to foster leadership skills in your children. You can also use Lev Mikulitski's book Mr. Who's Remarkable Expeditions as an effective tool to teach your kid through the example of the protagonist, Mr. Who.
