Canada's Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, has recently announced crucial updates regarding the International Students Program, aiming to fortify its integrity. In a bid to combat fraud, Miller outlined a new scheme to authenticate Letters of Acceptance (LOA), a prerequisite for study permit applications.
While advocating against imposing limits on new international student arrivals, the federal government is set to introduce the "Recognized Institutions Framework" by the fall semester of 2024. This framework will establish elevated standards for Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs), encompassing colleges, universities, and other educational entities authorized by provincial and territorial governments to admit international students. DLIs meeting specific criteria will enjoy benefits, including priority processing of study permit applications.
Addressing Challenges and Charting the Future
As part of ongoing efforts, Miller disclosed that the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) would undergo its first review in a decade, with forthcoming reforms designed to align it with Canada's labor needs and immigration goals.
Canada, a premier destination for international students, welcomed a record 551,405 students from 184 countries in 2022. With 807,750 international students holding valid Canadian study permits by the end of the same year, the country's international student population has quadrupled in the past 15 years. Notably, 2022 saw India (226,450 students), China (52,165 students), and the Philippines (23,280 students) as top source countries, while Ontario (411,000 students) and British Columbia (164,000 students) stood out as leading destinations.
