Unveiling the Versatility and Efficiency of Cone Crushers A Comprehensive Exploration

A cone crusher is a type of crushing equipment designed for breaking a variety of mediums, hard and mid-hard materials. Cone crushers are among the most commonly used crushing equipment in mining operations and aggregates production industries. They find applications in crushing minerals, ores, rocks, recycled materials etc. Let us explore this vital machine in detail.

Working principle

A cone crusher breaks rock by squeezing or compressing it between an eccentrically gyrating spindle, which is covered by a wear resistant mantle, and an outer fixed wall called the bowl liner that is filled with rock opening. As rock enters the top of the cone crusher, it becomes wedged and squeezed between the outer, spinning cone and the stationary bowl liner. Large pieces are crushed by being squeezed and forced farther down the concave space as the cone whirls around the stationary bowl liner. The rock is crushed by compression and fracture, resulting in a continuous flow of reasonably uniform product out the discharge opening at the bottom of the crusher.

Components

The key components of a cone crusher include:

- Bowl liner: It is the stationary inner surface covered with manganese or other wear-resistant tiles. It supports rock from inside while crushing.

- Mantle: It is a movable outer surface mounted on the main shaft. It gyrates and provides the squeezing action needed for crushing rock. Common mantle materials include cast alloy steels.

- Main shaft: Connected to an eccentric assembly, the main shaft transmits torque that causes the mantle to gyrate within the bowl liner cavity.

- Frame and eccentric assembly: The frame houses other major components and is responsible for supporting the entire unit. The eccentric assembly drives the gyrating motion of the mantle.

- Lubrication system: It supplies oil/lubricant to minimize friction and wear during operation.

Types of cone crushers

Based on configuration and eccentric location, there are three major types of cone crushers - spider bearing, floating bowl bearing and pendulum bearing:

Spider bearing cone crusher has a supported bowl assembly suspended on spider arms to avoid overload surge and provide greater structural integrity. Floating bowl bearing cone crusher relies solely on active crushing zone adjustment to regulate discharge size. Pendulum bearing design suspends the bowl from a pivot point to allow natural rolling action. Each type varies in design, efficiency and application suitability.

Main applications

Cone crushers deliver better yields and shape cracked material for further processing in many mineral processing and aggregate production operations:

- Mining industry: Cone crushers are employed both underground and above ground for mining sulfides, ferrous and non-ferrous ores. They break ore to sizes transportable by conveyor belts or for feed to a grinding mill.

- Aggregate production: Manufacturing sand, gravel and crushed stone relies heavily on cone crushers to achieve desired particle size distributions at rock quarries and ancillary processing plants.

- Construction industry: Cracked aggregates obtained from cone crushers find use in road and building construction as concrete aggregates and similar applications.

- Recycling industry: Cone crushers efficiently break old concrete, tarmac, bricks etc. for reuse as sub-base material or aggregate filler.

Advantages

Cone Crushers offer diverse benefits making them a preferred choice for different crushing needs:

- High capacity and throughput: Cone crushers can handle high volumes of fed material and provide high production rates.

- Adjustable discharge size: Cone crushers allow controlling the product size by adjusting the settings. This reduces need for multiple machines.

- Low lifecycle cost: Durable design, less wear parts and simpler operation cut operational and maintenance costs significantly over long run.

- Consistent sized end product: The eccentric motion ensures uniformly sized crushed product without any contamination.

- Wide application range: Capable of handling soft to extremely hard rocks, ores and minerals across diverse industries.
