Seafarers working on commercial vessels and superyachts must meet certain requirements to ensure they can perform their jobs accurately and safely. STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) has been mandatory since 1995, and STCW refresher courses have been mandatory since 2017. Crew serving onboard a ship with a valid STCW must have either completed the training course or have updated their training in the past five years.

What is the STCW Basic Refresher course?

The refresher course involves mostly hands-on training. The certificates issued upon completion of this course keep your whole STCW Basic Safety certification up to date.
Do I need to complete a refresher course?
You are qualified and can undertake the refresher course if you are over the age of 18 and are already in possession of:
- An STCW Certificate of Proficiency as a Navigation or Engine Room Watch Rating
- An STCW Certificate of Proficiency as an Able Seafarer, ILO Certificate of Competency as an Able Seaman, STCW Certificate of Proficiency as Able Seafarer or Electro-Technical Rating
- A Marine Engine Operators License (Merchant Navy and Yacht)
- Any Certificate of Competency for Deck Officer, Engineer Officers
- A GMDSS Certificate and work as a Radio Operator
