When I, Chris Salis, Sap expert, look back on my career, one thing stands out clearly: success is never about one big leap. It’s about many small, deliberate steps that eventually lead you to places you never imagined you’d reach.
My journey took me from procurement to becoming Global Vice President at SAP, and later to advising startups and co-founding a nonprofit. It taught me that with persistence, adaptability, and purpose, anyone can scale both business and impact.
How It All Began?
After graduating from Purdue University, I began my career at Adecco Employment Services. My role wasn’t glamorous; I managed IT procurement programs for corporate operations and hundreds of branch locations. It was here that I learned the value of process, negotiation, and building strong vendor partnerships.
At Adecco, I handled supplier management, contract negotiations, and strategy for IT procurement. What seemed like small wins at the time actually reshaped the company’s employment processes. I didn’t know it then, but those experiences were setting the foundation for the leader I would eventually become.
Finding My Momentum
After Adecco, I, Chris Salis, Sap expert, had the opportunity to work with Gap Inc. and later with eBay. There, I focused on procurement, sourcing, and operational excellence. Each role gave me a deeper understanding of how businesses could work smarter, not just harder.
The real turning point in my career came in 2006 when I joined Business Objects. I started as a Senior Manager but quickly moved into executive leadership roles, eventually becoming Executive Director and Chief of Staff for the Office of the CEO.
At Business Objects, I had the privilege of setting leadership priorities, overseeing billion-dollar forecasts, and working on mergers and acquisitions. This was where I learned how to merge technology with business strategy, a lesson that would later define my years at SAP.
My Time at SAP
When Business Objects merged with SAP, I was given the chance to step into an even bigger role. By 2010, I became Vice President and Head of Global Sales for Procurement Solutions. Later, I served as Global Vice President and General Manager, and finally as Global Vice President and Head of Portfolio for Go-to-Market.
These years at SAP were some of the most rewarding of my career. Together with my teams, we:
Reversed declining revenues and achieved the highest line-of-business quota in 2010–2011.
Launched new SaaS models that cut the time to revenue from 12 months to just 90 days.
Transformed zero-revenue products into $41 million successes.
Drove 4x SaaS revenue growth and achieved 300% overall growth in 2011.
Played a role in SAP’s $4.3 billion acquisition of Ariba, later leading the company post-merger.
One of my proudest contributions was commercializing SAP’s digital business unit. We built models and systems that outlasted us, scaling value for years to come.
A New Chapter: Advising and Consulting
After leaving SAP, I wanted to apply my experience differently. I became Managing Partner at Catapuult Consulting, where I worked with enterprises on procurement strategies. I helped startups reach their first million dollars in recurring revenue.
Giving Back: Secure Our Schools
In 2022, I co-founded the Secure Our Schools Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving school safety through technology. We’ve supported more than 250,000 K–12 students with programs focused on active shooter prevention, medical emergency response, and incident management.
Helping schools prepare for and respond to emergencies has been one of the most meaningful projects of my career.
Lessons from My Journey
Looking back, here’s what my journey has taught me:
Every role matters. No job is too small to be a stepping stone to something bigger.
Stay adaptable. Change is constant, and the ability to evolve makes all the difference.
Impact is the real measure of success. Revenue matters, but building systems, teams, and organizations that thrive long after you’ve moved on matters more.
Purpose drives everything. Ambition is powerful, but when it’s tied to a purpose beyond yourself, the results can be extraordinary.
In the end, true success is not just about what you achieve, but about the lasting impact and purpose you leave behind.
The Legacy of Growth
The story of Chris Salis SAP is proving that growth, innovation, and strategy are within reach for anyone willing to commit to the journey. My career has shown me that scaling is not just about revenue, it’s about impact, legacy, and the courage to keep moving forward.
If there’s one thing I hope others take from my path, it’s this: success isn’t reserved for a chosen few. With expertise, vision, persistence, and purpose, anyone can create meaningful growth for themselves, for their business, and for the world around them.
