The Eye-Catching Piaget Polo 79 With Blue Sodalite Dial

In 2024, to celebrate its 150th anniversary, Piaget launched an 18K yellow gold re-edition of its renowned Polo 79 timepiece, powered by an ultra-thin mechanical movement. At the 2026 "Watches & Wonders" Geneva exhibition, Piaget introduced a brand-new white gold version of the Polo 79, featuring a striking blue sodalite dial.

The Polo was once described as "a bracelet with a watch attached, rather than a watch with a bracelet"; it was positioned as a piece of high jewelry rather than a traditional timepiece—marking Piaget's first watch model to be given a dedicated name. However, despite serving as a highly conspicuous status symbol among the celebrity elite of its time, the Polo gradually faded from prominence as tastes and trends shifted, and it was eventually discontinued in the late 1980s.

Following the 2024 re-release of the yellow gold Polo 79, the brand subsequently introduced versions in white gold and bi-color gold. The new generation Polo 79 features a case measuring 38mm x 7.45mm and is powered by Piaget’s ultra-thin Calibre 1200P1. This movement serves as the successor to the brand’s renowned Calibre 12P and measures a mere 2.35mm in thickness. The model’s elegant, fluid lines—characterized by horizontally brushed links and highly polished transverse ridges—have been faithfully recreated today, now reimagined in white gold and paired with a captivating blue Sodalite mineral dial.

The sodalite dial serves as a tribute to—and a retrospective on—the stylish jewelry watches featuring hardstone dials that Yves Piaget introduced during the 1960s and 70s. Sodalite is a mineral characterized by a royal blue hue interspersed with veins of white calcite, a composition that harmonizes perfectly with the overall aesthetic of this timepiece. Out of respect for the Polo design codes, the blue sodalite does not displace the iconic horizontal motif; instead, it is artfully set between the four polished white gold bands that traverse the dial. However, unlike earlier iterations, this sodalite dial omits the dot markers typically found on the minute track.

Through the sapphire crystal case back, one can admire the exquisite finishing of the Calibre 1200P1. This self-winding movement is wound by an off-center micro-rotor, beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (vph), and offers a power reserve of 44 hours. The movement’s surfaces are adorned with circular *Côtes de Genève* stripes, further embellished with chamfered bridges, blued steel screws, and *perlage* finishing.
