Despite almost being atrocious in its actual implementation, Nintendo's Power Glove accessory back in the NES days sparked many a hackers and tinkerer's imagination because of the possibilities it opened.

Like this Hackaday project that shows a drone who's boss by controlling it with nothing but Jedi hand gestures.

These are then fed to a logic chip that interprets these signals and translates them into drone commands that a ESP8266 Wi-Fi module then sends to the paired drone.

The end result, of course, looks like magic.

It doesn't offer perfect control of the drone, of course, at least not better than the more fine-grained movements of a dedicated handheld controller.

It also perhaps underlies interest in alternative, and probably more natural, ways to control drones, like Xiaomi's idea for controlling a drone through a smart wristband.

I never got a chance to use it, but I always thought the Nintendo Power Glove was the ultimate game controller – it was the first one you could actually wear.

Now, 27 years after it was first launched, engineer Nolan Moore has found a way to retool the iconic device to control a drone.

At the Bay Area Maker Faire, Moore showed off his modified Power Glove which he gutted and fitted with custom boards and sensors to allow him to control a Parrot AR drone over Wi-Fi.

Holding your hand our with your palm facing the ground causes the drone to hover, while making a fist and tilting it will make the drone pitch and roll.

You can also point up or down to make it rise or approach the ground.

Nolan Moore demonstrated the modified version of Mattel's 1989 NES motion controller at 2016's Hackaday Maker Faire in San Francisco.

Nearly 30s years after its release, however, the peripheral appears to have finally found its calling in life – after receiving a fairly substantial upgrade, that is.

After a bit of tinkering, Moore turned the Power Glove into a gesture-based controller for a Parrot AR Drone by stripping out most the device's original components and replacing them with modern control boards and sensors.

A battery upgrade was also needed to keep the more powerful innards ticking over, while a Wi-Fi transmitter was also added for controlling the drone, in place of a standard RC transmitter.

It may look the same, but this Power Glove has been given a serious upgrade on the 80s original

Moore is already working on a second version of a control board for his Power Glove though, to which he hopes to pack in Bluetooth support and a Musical Instrument Digital Interface perhaps so he can pump out Flight Of The Valkyries as he sets his army of drones upon the world.

Meanwhile, if you happen to have a Power Glove lying around and don't have the time, energy or knowledge to turn it into something useful, you could try selling it on eBay it might fetch you a pretty penny.
