This dongle has USB-C, USB-A, and HDMI ports, and the HDMI options got a little better.

Apple is finally rewarding security researchers for finding security flaws in macOS.

At the Black Hat conference today, Apple announced that it is greatly expanding its existing bug bounty program to include macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and iCloud.

It will include rewards of up to $1 million for a zero-click, full chain kernel code execution attack.

While Apple originally started paying iOS bounties three years ago, researchers have only been paid for ones found in Apple’s mobile operating system.

macOS was never included, and it’s led to a number of security researchers pushing the company to change course.

Apple is now expanding its bug bounty program far behind just iOS.

Roughly three years ago, Apple began paying security researchers for discoveries of unknown vulnerabilities in iOS, and today, it’s responding to long-standing requests by adding macOS, watchOS, and tvOS devices to the list.

Additionally, the company is now offering a maximum reward of $1 million for the most serious security issues, providing researchers with even more incentive to report rather than horde their findings.

The news went public today at the annual Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas (via TechCrunch), where lead Apple security developer Ivan Krstić disclosed key updates to the bug bounty program.

Apple will now pay $1 million for a deadly serious exploit — a zero-click attack that enables complete, persistent control of an iPhone’s kernel with nothing more than knowledge of the device’s phone number — up from a peak of $200,000 before.

Less serious exploits will qualify for smaller amounts.

For the company, the risk of low payments has been that security researchers will instead hand their findings off to private organizations, such as Grayshift and Cellebrite, that will subsequently exploit Apple’s devices for profit.

Apple is finally giving security researchers something they’ve wanted for years: a macOS bug bounty.

The technology giant said Thursday it will roll out the bug bounty program to include Macs and MacBooks, as well as Apple TV and Apple Watch, almost exactly three years after it debuted its bug bounty program for iOS.

The idea is simple: you find a vulnerability, you disclose it to Apple, they fix it — and in return you get a cash payout.

These programs are wildly popular in the tech industry as it helps to fund security researchers in exchange for serious security flaws that could otherwise be used by malicious actors, and also helps fill the void of bug finders selling their vulnerabilities to exploit brokers, and on the black market, who might abuse the flaws to conduct surveillance.

Some security researchers had flat-out refused to report security flaws to Apple in absence of a bug bounty.

At the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, head of security engineering and architecture Ivan Krstić announced the program to run alongside its existing iOS bug bounty.

It works almost seamlessly and is so much more secure than rival systems without being a burden or getting in your way.

Well, that may soon change, as Apple has just been granted a patent for a Face ID-like system that can be implemented in a MacBook.

As I opined last month, this is long overdue.

Its basic idea is that a Mac could be equipped with a set of sensors that detect when you’re near your Mac and, like the dancing elves staring through my bedroom window at night, prevent it from going to sleep.

Where it gets interesting is where the patent mentions what happens if the sensors detect that a person is nearby: “If the [detected] object is a person, the device determines a position of the person relative to the computing device and executes a change of state in the computing device based on the position of the person relative to the computing device.”

Once you penetrate the dense patent-speak, it seems to us this is describing a system that could potentially log you in to your Mac if it recognizes your face.

After Apple streamlined the types of ports on its hardware, having adapters remains a necessary evil.

For now, at least the company has made a notable quality-of-life improvement to one of its AV dongles.

Apple recently released an updated version of the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter.

This dongle has USB-C, USB-A, and HDMI ports, and the HDMI options got a little better.

The device now includes support for 4K video at 60 Hz as well as HDR video in either HDR10 or Dolby Vision.

This update is available when the video is coming from a 15-inch MacBook Pro from 2017 or later, a Retina iMac from 2017 or later, an iMac Pro, or an iPad Pro, and is plugged into a playback device that also supports 4K and HDR.

Geekz Snow 2019-08-08
