Dental Implants Failure and Preventive factors

A dental Implant is a metal column that’s surgically connected to the jaw bone to hold an artificial tooth. Once set, a therapeutic dentist or oral surgeon fixes a replacement tooth to the implant.

Dental Implant has a high achievement rate, but some people encounter dental implant failure. It’s calculated that about 5 to 10% of dental implants failure, either shortly after a method for months or years later.

If you’re programmed to have dental implant surgery, or if you currently have an implant. Let's see the major factors that impact the dental implant success?

Factors that impact dental implant Success

There are significant factors that affect the success of a dental implant which include:

  • Smoking: Smoking is the primary factor that causes the failure of the dental implant as it limits the blood flow to the gums, and slows the healing process. Studies have shown that smokers can have a dental implant failure rate up to 20%.
  • Medical Conditions:  Dental Implant fails if you are diagnosed with an autoimmune disease or conditions like arthritis and diabetes which cause the body to heal at a slower pace. Slow healing can stop osseointegration, where the implant blends or integrates with your jaw bone.
  • Inexperienced Surgeon: An experienced surgeon knows how many implants used to support tooth replacement and is essential as too few implants can cause excessive stress on the implant and failure. Always choose a surgeon with high experience.
  • Gum Disease: Healthy gums are criteria for implant surgery, and you can’t have this procedure with active gum disease. Gum disease is an infection that can harm the gums and jaw bone. An untreated gum will be infected and can develop around the implant and lead to failure.

Preventive Care

Even though some dental implant fails can’t be blocked, you can take steps to overcome the risk of failure:

  • Accurately care for your dental implants. Brush and floss daily and use mouthwash.
  • Attend a dentist every six months.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Improve your calcium intake to support healthy bones. Take a sequel or consume calcium-rich foods like milk, yogurt, broccoli, oranges, and cheese.
  • Request your dentist about a mouth protector to treat bruxism (teeth grinding).
  • Don’t get direct tooth replacement after an implant procedure.
  • Avoid habits that harm teeth (eating ice and candy)
