Chiropractic, Smoking and back pain

Being a total non-smoker, it is very difficult to understand the difficulty to try and stop smoking if wanting to give up. We are bombarded with images of unhealthy lungs, but it can be very tough for many to kick the addiction. Everyone knows that smoking is unhealthy and has been linked to an increased risk of having a stroke, heart disease and lung cancer. Something you may not be aware of however is the link between smoking and backache. So, what is the link you may ask? Well, the science bit is that the brain activity increases in people with a smoking addiction and in turn this may increase chronic pain developing. This was shown when tests were carried out on people that had stopped smoking. So just how does this link with chronic pain?

The link between smoking and back pain

Chemical interferences have been found to affect the pain levels in those people that smoke, and tests have been proven that smokers experience a higher level of pain than non-smokers. The natural pain detection in the body is affected and in fact in relation to numbers smokers are three times more likely to develop chronic back pain. The effects of nicotine on the spine also have a detrimental effect. There is also evidence that smokers who sustain a spinal injury may take longer to heal.

My son who smokes started to get very bad lower backache but because he is a carpenter by trade he just thought that his lower back pain was due to the nature of his work and that all the bending and twisting that he does was the cause. Recently one morning hehad a massive struggle to get out of bed and Ifound him crawling on all fours trying to get ready for work and very distressed he decided that he needed to see someone urgently. His doctors surgery could not fit him in to see his GP on that day so I googled www.eastbourne-chiropractor-near-me.comand am so very glad I did. We found a fantastic local clinic where all the staff were veryhelpful and fortunately they had an appointment so that he could be seen that day. It was terrible seeing him hunched over and in so much pain trying to get himself to the clinic. The chiropractor really took his time to try and get to the root of the problem. Theconsultation threw up many questions and they established that my son did smoke, and the chiropractor knowledgably explained that smoking causes a build-up of plaque on the inside of the blood vessels and this then decreases the blood supply to other areas. My son is obviously aware of the dangers of smoking and I’m always nagging him to give up, but he didn’t realise that smoking could make the pain of back ache worse. More scarily the chiropractor said that decreased blood supply to the bones and discs in the spine can reduce normal function and eventually lead to degeneration such as osteoporosis causing more pain. After several appointments my sons back started to improve and now he makes a point of having regular maintenance treatments. Happily, he has also quit smoking – yeah!

If you have lower back pain, you may want to think about having chiropractic care. Having treatments before the pain becomes too bad will help to manage it. Trying to stay more active and exercise more will help to. Why not look at this great site www.lushingtonchiropractic.com
