The software will first appear in smart screen devices and will eventually be available on wearables and in-car systems too.
The debut comes as President Trump said the US will cut its ties with Huawei.
On Friday, Chinese tech giant Huawei unveiled its new HarmonyOS software— an operating system for its upcoming electronic devices.
The launch comes as Huawei remains on a blacklist that prevents it from working with American software giants like Google.
In the wake of Huawei's announcement, President Trump said on Friday that the United States will cut its ties with the Chinese tech behemoth.
The move comes just after China had stopped purchasing American agricultural products, a response to the Trump administration's latest round of tariffs on Chinese imports.
At the Huawei Developer Conference, the Chinese vendor has showcased Harmony OS, its in-house operating system to provide an alternative to Google’s Android.
We needed an OS that supports all scenarios, that can be used across a broad range of devices and platforms, and that can meet consumer demand for low latency and strong security.”
Currently, Harmony OS is more of a competitor to Google’s IOT focused OS, Fuchsia, but it is not difficult to see this was developed with mobile in mind also.
Many have connected the White House’s propaganda to the on-going trade ware between the US and China, though the underlying reasons are irrelevant; the ripples of posturing are going to have negative impacts.
This of course includes Google and Android.
Huawei might downplay the importance of this move, though the implications are significant.
Huawei is hosting its annual developer’s conference, HDC 2019, in China from August 9th – August 11 2019.
Harmony OS is Huawei’s self-developed operating system.
At Huawei Developer Conference, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group said Harmony OS is ready to be “deployed on the company’s smartphones any time but Huawei want to use Google’s Android OS due to its partnership and its vast ecosystem.” He also added that Harmony OS is faster than Android but the company still wants to use Android’s ecosystem at the moment.

Just few days back rumor mill was abuzz with the news that HongMeng OS is Huawei’s answer to Google’s Android operating system.
Google has released a new statement regarding the Huawei situation, this time via the Android Twitter account. As seen below, the company states that current Huawei (and likely Honor) phones will continue having access to services like Google Play and security from Google Play Protect.
