What Is The "DOT"?

The DOT code (comes from the Department of Transportation) is a tire designation that contains specific information about the production of that tire, where and when it was manufactured. For the end customer, the most important information from the DOT code is the year of production.

These are four digits, usually surrounded by an oval, but not required. The first two indicate the week of production and the next two indicate the year. For example, a DOT NEDV JA2R 4916 tire was manufactured in Week 49 of 2016.

The year of production has nothing to do with the aging of the tire or its shelf life!

All manufacturers - MICHELIN, CONTINENTAL, GOODYEAR, guarantee the quality of the rubber of the tire for a period of 5 years from the date of purchase, documented or 5 years from the date of manufacture when the tires are stored under the required conditions (temperature, humidity, sunlight, position, etc.) !!!
The tire is a product simple in appearance but with complex characteristics.

A product that has to withstand extreme conditions to ensure traffic safety. A product that, like any other product, has a shelf life. The service life depends on several factors. In addition to the characteristic qualities of the product, conditions of use, speed, load, and climate also have an impact.

Tire pressure levels, as well as storage conditions, also affect the service life.

Here's what some of the leading tire manufacturers say:

Michelin: "It is not possible to determine the shelf life of tires. It doesn't matter when they are produced. Michelin recommends 10 years of operation. After this period, check the tires more frequently and, if there is a crack, replace them. "

Continental: "Tire aging is a manifestation of chemical and physical processes. With properly stored tires, however, these processes run very slowly. Continental recommends that tires be stored by a professional or in a suitable environment. If stored under the recommended conditions (namely a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, chemicals and ozone sources), the tires will retain their original, well-balanced properties throughout their life span. The warranty period starts from the date of purchase of the tire. Continental confirms that the light-duty tires of the concern can be used for up to 10 years, provided that all recommended storage conditions are met. "

Goodyear: "Goodyear tires are designed to be resistant to high forces, stress, sun exposure and extreme temperatures throughout their lives. To preserve its properties, the components of the tire are made from an optimal blend of waxes, antioxidants, and antiozonants. Tires stored and used will retain their properties, provided that they are properly maintained, handled improperly and stored in the right conditions. "
