Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a therapy that has now been used for a number of years to treat various conditions from immune disorders to chronic lung disease to wounds and, more recently, to relieve the symptoms of dementia, overdosing on laughing gas (N2O) and treating people suffering a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

HBOT therapy provides 100% oxygen under pressures between 1,5 to 3 times higher than atmospheric pressure. HBOT enables oxygen to be delivered to the mitochondria at a cellular level quickly and efficiently.

HBOT not only protects neurons by accelerating collateral circulation it also repairs the damaged microvessels. This stimulates the generation of new blood vessels to form from pre-existing blood vessels (angiogenesis) and of neurons being formed by neural stem cells (neurogenesis). Medical practitioners who prescribe HBOT for cognitive improvement report a noticeable improvement in the overall health and well-being of patients thanks to this effect of protecting, creating and repairing at a cellular level in all parts of the body.

While there are many medical uses for hyperbaric oxygen therapy that are unapproved, there are 13 conditions that have been approved by the FDA. These are the 13 conditions:

• Air or gas embolism

• Intracranial abscess

• Clostridal myositis and myonecrosis (gas gangrene)

• Carbon monoxide poisoning

• Exceptional blood loss (anemia)

• Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias

• Decompression sickness

• Enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds such as:

(Diabetically derived illness, such as diabetic foot, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy)

• Exceptional blood loss (anemia)

• Intracranial abscess

• Necrotizing soft tissue infections (necrotizing fasciitis)

• Osteomyelitis (refractory)

• Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis)

• Skin grafts and flaps (compromised)

• Thermal burns

Several clinical trials of other conditions being treated with HBOT have proven successful. It was even tested on people who had overdosed on laughing gas. The disorientation, memory impairment, numbness and weakness in limbs, speech and mobility difficulties experienced as a result of abusing N2O responded well to HBOT. In fact, the improvement was evident in an MRI scan re-examining the cranium after treatment.

Another trial that is very important was one where tests were done on people suffering with traumatic brain injuries of all severities. Patients were evaluated with objective cognitive function tests and metabolic brain imaging. HBOT was associated with significant cognitive improvements. The clinical improvement in cognitive function matched the increased activity in the relevant brain areas. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) could make a big difference to the tens of millions of people all over the world who live with the challenge of a traumatic brain injury.
