The Disease Called Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder which has become an epidemic since the past few decades. There are many causes and risk factors of this disease. Obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress, awkward food habits have been labelled as the primary cause of diabetes. The blog will describe what is diabetes and how Ayurveda helps in reducing the harmful effects of this disease.

Carbohydrate Metabolism

The carbohydrates present in the food is broken down into glucose which is made available to the cells as energy. To initiate this activity, a hormone named insulin is needed.

  • Importance of Insulin

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from food that you eat for energy, or to store glucose for future use. Insulin helps keeps your blood sugar level from getting too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia).

  • Function of Insulin

The cells in your body need sugar for energy. However, sugar cannot go into most of your cells directly. When insulin is released in the bloodstream after a meal, it attaches to the signals cells and makes them absorb sugar from the bloodstream.

  • Insufficient Insulin Causes Diabetes

When there is insufficient insulin, glucose from carbohydrate metabolism does not move into the cells. Much of it remains unused and builds up in the blood while the cells actually remain devoid of glucose. This causes a disorder in the body which is called diabetes.

In diabetes, your body fails to metabolize the glucose produced from digestion of food. Both type 1 or type 2 are related to insufficient secretion of insulin. Either there is insufficient insulin production in the body or the insulin that is being produced is not being utilized to manage glucose metabolism.

  • Result of Insufficient Insulin

Excess of glucose is present in the blood and in urine. High blood glucose damages the blood vessels. It affects our vital organs like heart, kidneys, eyes or the nervous system. Diabetes leads to complications like heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, nerve problems, dental problems and even stroke.

Ayurvedic Cause of Diabetes

According to Ayurveda, diabetes results from imbalance of “kapha” energy, which is made of earth and water elements. Ayurveda practitioners believe that diabetes arises from the decrease in the digestive fire, or "agni," which suppresses the ability of the body to metabolize. Obesity needs to be taken care of for treating diabetes.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Diabetes

Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes is a wide range of therapy-Diet plan, internal medicines, herbal therapies of Panchakarma treatment for weight loss, such as Vamana, Virechana, Basti etc. The treatment varies according to the severity of the diabetes in a person. The natural remedies enhance insulin sensitivity of certain glucose receptors which decreases insulin resistance, stimulates insulin secretion and regenerates beta cells.

  • Yogasanas-Yoga helps in controlling diabetes by reducing stress and obesity. A few such yoga postures that can reduce diabetic conditions are pranayam, surya namaskar, balasana, vajrasana, sarvangasana, halasana, dhanurasana.
