Opinion essay

In this article, I want to give a short description of what an opinion Essay is. I will not give a definition of an opinion essay because it is in any textbook or reference material that is given at school or college.
I will just say that the Opinion essay is one of the most popular types of essays, it is found almost everywhere: on international exams, and when doing homework in college. Therefore, you will definitely come across this type of essay.

What Should Be in an Essay

There should be an introduction, the main part, and the conclusion.
The introduction sets the topic and expresses the opinion of the author.
The main part usually contains two blocks:
the reasoning of the author's opinion;
the opposite of the author's opinion.
Thus, in the first block of the main part, we explain to the reader in detail why we have this opinion, support our thought with arguments and examples. In the second block, we cover the position opposite to ours and also explain why we do not consider this position correct.
In some tasks, the need to cover an alternative position is clearly stated; in some tasks, there is no such indication. If there are no unequivocal instructions, we should proceed from the essay volume. If the volume is limited to 150 words, the second block should be lowered. If the volume is limited to 300 words, it is more correct to turn it on.
The conclusion sums up everything said in the main part and again expresses the author's opinion but in other words.

Subdivision into paragraphs

Introduction, main part, and conclusion are always separated into separate paragraphs. Thus, any opinion essay contains at least three paragraphs. As for dividing the main part, the block with the opposite opinion is always separated. The rest can be divided or not, following the principles of logic and requirements in the task.

Style Opinion Essay

The essay should be written in a neutral style. This means that there should be no abbreviations or colloquial expressions in the work. Complex lexical and grammatical constructions are preferable to simple ones.

Use a neutral writing style, that is:

Absence of too simple sentences; combine simple sentences into complex ones, using logical means of communication (that is why - so - so, whereas/while - while, thus - in this way, because - despite the fact that, as long as - because, provided that - etc.)
try not to use abbreviated forms such as don't or can't (it is better to do not and cannot);
do not use parentheses or exclamation points - this is typical for an informal writing style;
do not start sentences with words and, but, also. You can use them in spoken language, but avoid them in your essay;
do not use introductory words that are specific to the informal style (well, you know, guess what);
