IELTS is an international-level exam to assess the skills of English of those who belong to non-English speaking countries and want to study or work in English-speaking countries. Australia, New Zealand, London, and the USA are some countries where the primary language is English. IELTS assesses ones’ skills for English speaking, writing, listening, and reading. The band score of the test is from 0 to 9. Those who score above 6 can become eligible to apply for a student or work visa to an English-speaking country easily. However, the assessment of scores is different for different countries, and it also depends on the work or program you want to do abroad. Understanding the Writing Assessment

IELTS writing test comprises two types of tasks. The Task 1 is of 33% for which 20 minutes are provided. The paragraph needs to be written in 150 words. The academic writing Task 2 is a formal essay on opinion, discussion, advantages, direction questions and solutions. Completing the test in the given time frame is important. It is necessary to maintain the given word limit.

Understanding Band Scores and Marking Criteria

As an IELTS aspirant, you must be aware of the band scores for each criterion of the test. The IELTS examiner will give you score on your task achievement, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammatical accuracy. For each point, the mark distribution is equal. So, you will have to be perfect in each point.

Using Vocabulary

How many new words you use in your writing and how you use them play a crucial role. It gives the examiner a hint that you have moderate or excellent command over the language. For example, the writing Task 1 comprises line graphs, maps, and pie charts. Describe the graph with a range of words such as rise, fall, fluctuate, dip, peak at, and bottom out. Using new words will enhance your writing style and make it impressive. However, some vocabulary errors can take your band score to 6 while few errors can help you score 7.

Grammar

Your aim for IELTS is to get a good score. Therefore, you need to work on complex sentence structure. Meaningful and complex sentence structure can help you achieve the band score 6 or above. Don’t do silly mistakes of grammar. If you have frequent errors, you may get band score 5 or below.
