Sony Announced New Versions of Sony A7R III and A7R IV Mirrorless Cameras

Sony has recently released its two mirrorless cameras with some upgrades, the Sony A7R III and Sony A7R IV. The upgrades were minor, especially for anyone who’s been thinking to buy one of the high-resolution Alpha cameras. Point to be noted that Sony’s YouTube video announced the Sony A7R III also called the ILCE-7RM3A and Sony A7R IV with ILCE-7RM4A model number during this week. Both cameras bring changes in a new rear LCD screen. Their display now has a more modern 2.36-million dot resolution, instead of the older 1.44-million dot displays on the current models. Moreover, the only other changes include the USB port. It has been changed to USB 3.2, similar to the Sony A7S III. However, there’s no longer a Sony logo beneath the LCD monitor.

These new LCD displays are considered a decent improvement for reviewing images. It is noteworthy that both new advanced models aren’t available yet, but the company said, “The current models will still be available to purchase, in line with retail stock. We don’t yet have an on-sale date for the new model”. So, the retailers will sell their currently available Sony A7R III ILCE-7RM3 and Sony A7R IV ILCE-7RM4, before the new versions go on sale. Sony also said, “We have updated the Alpha 7R III and Alpha 7R IV in response to customer needs, as we always strive to provide the best technology”. It is important that Sony A1 arrived in January with the same 1.44-million dot LCD screen, but it wasn’t advanced enough for the older A7R III and A7R IV.

Those new LCD screens actually have a slightly negative effect on the battery life of new models, which has dropped by 10 shots compared to the current cameras. Some photographers who spend most of their time in the electronic viewfinder may actually prefer a lower-resolution rear screen. But, it’ll be worth waiting for the new versions of the cameras to land if you need those new 2.36-million dot LCDs. You should check the retailer that you’re getting an ‘ILCE-7RM4A’ version of the Sony A7R IV or an ‘ILCE-7RM3A’ version for the A7R III. Moreover, the cameras will be identical to their ‘predecessors’ in terms of their sensors and processors. Sony launched RX100 V and Sony RX100 VA compact cameras in 2019, which actually came featuring a new Bionz X Processor with several new features.
