Emergence of Covid-19 to Boost Demand for Viral Conjunctivitis Drugs

Viral conjunctivitis can be annoying and painful, but is rarely dangerous. However, if it persists, it may become painful or cause damage to the eye. It typically appears in children but can occur in adults. There is no current treatment for viral conjunctivitis. Most commonly used viral conjunctivitis drugs include, antiviral drugs.

Patients with conjunctivitis often feel redness, warmth and itchiness around the eye. This is usually caused by inflammation of the eyelids. Redness can spread quickly to the cheekbones and forehead and may even extend to the neck and scalp. The intense pain is usually felt on one side only, however, and is not widespread. The individual may also feel fatigue, loss of appetite and sensitivity to light and noise. Emergence of Covid-19 has also led to increasing cases of viral conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea are some of the symptoms of novel coronavirus and included to the list.

While bacterial conjunctivitis often occurs during an acute bout with a particular virus (such as a common cold), it can also occur sporadically or develop over time. Acute conjunctivitis can be caused by many different strains of bacteria. Some of these include, Streptococcus viridans, Staphylococcus aureus and a group of viruses collectively known as Streptococcal pneumonia. They are grouped into two main categories: group A and group B. The streptococci belong to group A, while the group B includes the bacterium that causes the common cold.

Treatment of viral conjunctivitis depends on its cause. Prophylactic administration of 1% corticosteroids in a solution of hydrocortisone and balsam of Peru (BOP) has been shown to shorten the duration of pink eye and reduce pain. No studies have shown the effectiveness of certain antiviral agents for viral conjunctivitis other than topical bactericotecic acid. A combination topical antiviral agent, which contains low-dose and betadine is in clinical phase III trials as a broad spectrum anti-viral agent for the treatment of viral conjunctivitis, HSV, ZVV, and several other types of conjunctival infections.

It is important to note that although a conjunctivitis infection may seem like a straightforward problem that can be easily remedied by using over-the-counter eye drops or antibiotics, this is not always the case. In fact, it is important for individuals to understand how to recognize the early symptoms of conjunctivitis and according select viral conjunctivitis drugs, particularly in terms of the appearance of discharge and redness. While conjunctivitis caused by streptococci can be dealt with in the same way as other cases of the infection, this type is especially notable because it has a propensity to last longer than typical types of conjunctivitis. As a result, individuals who suffer from this form of illness should avoid touching their eyes or using contact lenses and should wear protective clothing when possible.
