Here's the skinny on fat freezing

It seems as though freezing is the latest trend in noninvasive body sculpting — that is, losing fat without needles, knives, or downtime. Freezing fat is known medically as cryolipolysis.

A brief overview of body fat

Here are some essentials to get you started.

It is not true that all fats are the same.

There are two different kinds of fat in our bodies: subcutaneous fat (the stuff that rolls over a waistband and is associated with things like diabetes and heart disease) and visceral fat (the fat around our organs).

Cryolipolysis, as the name implies, is a procedure to melt subcutaneous fat.

Study results have shown that our bodies lose the ability to remove fat from the subcutaneous layer with age, which means that every birthday we celebrate is an uphill struggle.

A popsicle to a fat freezer

This physical phenomenon is called cryolipolysis, and it translates literally as cold (cryo) fat (lipo) destruction (lysis). Popsicles were used as a model for this procedure.

 This is no joke.

It was discovered that cold-induced fat necrosis occurs when children eat popsicles that have been left on their cheeks for several minutes after eating. This intrigued the co-founders of the process.

Using skin samples from pediatric patients, this type of inflammation was evident in the fat tissue but the overlying skin was normal.

As a result, fat appears to be particularly susceptible to cold injury compared with other tissue  types.

It was found that fat cells could be selectively destroyed by cooling pigs in 2007 based on this concept.

Results were positive and predictable; about a half-inch of fat was reduced without damaging the skin overlying the treated area.

CoolSculpting was approved in 2010 as the first cryolipolysis procedure that can be used on humans.

Clearance for treating other parts of the body, including the thighs, belly, bra fat, back, underside of the buttocks, and chin soon followed.

Cryolipolysis: How does it work? After the treatment, a few days after the fat cells are cooled, we think the fat cells will die.

A few months after a fat cell dies, macrophages, part of the immune system, digest it.

The coolest procedure

Worldwide, CoolSculpting has been performed more than eight million times.

CoolSculpting is a relatively safe procedure, without downtime or anesthesia, which is unlike liposuction, which can be extremely painful and vulnerable to bleeding and infection.

An area may need more than one application to be treated, and the treatment itself takes 35 minutes.

Getting rid of fat evenly from the entire belly front may require four or more applications.

Typically, patients report redness, swelling, bruising, tingling, and darkening of the treated area as side effects.

The majority of these side effects, if present, will disappear within several months of  treatment.

A paradoxical side effect of cryolipolysis is that it paradoxically leads to an increase in fat at the treatment site, despite being relatively rare.

However, it appears that this side effect occurs less  than 1% of the time.

Approximately three months after the first treatment, you should see the full benefits.

Fat loss is typically about 10% to 25% per round, and no side effects have been reported to date.

It may be necessary to reapply the treatment after several months, depending on the  desired results.

Is fat freezing right for you?

Cryolipolysis appears to be a safe, effective fat loss method that does not require surgery or downtime.

Cryolipolysis, however, should only be used to lose body fat, not weight.

Candidates for this procedure are near their ideal weight, but have stubborn, pinchable pockets of fat that are difficult to lose with diet and exercise alone.

Moreover, cryolipolysis won't eliminate visceral fat, so you won't benefit from the treatment in the long run.

You may be able to fit into your favorite skinny jeans with it as well.
