How to Make Monkey Bread With Frozen Bread Dough

Cinnamon rolls are an almost irresistible treat, but they take a lot of time and effort to make. Monkey bread captures the same flavors with a lot less time and effort, making it an ideal anytime treat when you're craving something fresh-baked and sugary.

This monkey bread recipe makes use of frozen bread dough for maximum convenience, and it also includes caramel sauce to make the finished bread even more delightfully addictive.

Total time: 60–70 minutes | Prep time: 10 minutes | Serves: 12–16

Ingredients:

- 2 frozen bread loaves (1 pound each) thawed
- 1/2 cup melted butter plus more for the pan
- 1/2 cup tightly packed brown sugar
- a quarter cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon powder
- 1/2 cup caramel ice cream topping (or another type of caramel sauce)

Directions:

  • Coat the inside of a large Bundt pan or tube pan with melted butter using a pastry brush. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Make 20 to 24 small balls out of each loaf of dough. In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter and the dough balls. Toss until the butter is evenly distributed.
  • In a small bowl, combine the sugars and cinnamon, then sprinkle over the dough balls and toss again. Finally, drizzle the caramel syrup over the balls and toss once more.
  • Layer the dough balls into your tube pan. Allow the dough to rise for 30 to 40 minutes in a warm place, or until it has roughly doubled in size.
  • Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the monkey bread is golden and firm to the touch. Remove the pan from the oven and place it on a cooling rack. Allow the bread to rest in the pan for 2 to 3 minutes before turning it over and tipping it out onto a serving plate. Serve as soon as it has cooled sufficiently to avoid burning those little monkey fingers.

Tip

- If desired, glaze the warm monkey bread with a simple flat icing (milk and powdered sugar whisked together) or regular vanilla icing from the supermarket, warmed gently in the microwave until just barely pourable.

- To make the monkey bread even more kid-friendly, scatter a handful of each chocolate chips and mini-marshmallows between the layers.

- To make it more adult, sprinkle coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans between the dough balls.
