Dogs For Senior Citizens

Most senior citizens will warm up to the thought of having a pet dog but will be aware that they are not physically able to deal with a large and active pet.  This is the reason why a smaller dog breed, like cavalier King Charles spaniels, the Maltese, or Shih Tzus might make better pets for them.

  • The cavalier is a gentle-natured and quiet dog. This breed also does not need a lot of grooming maintenance as opposed to other breeds. These dogs can also weigh about 15 pounds when fully grown.
  • The Shih Tzu is a lovable and adorable little dog suitable for elderly folks too. They might require grooming on a regular basis but their size makes them ideal for seniors to take out for walks and handle safely.
  • The Maltese breed stays small however still quite robust. These dogs are ideal lapdogs but will require grooming regularly.

All these mentioned breeds will thrive in a small home and will not need large backyards for enough exercise.  Their size is good enough to walk safely or be picked up by most elderly citizens.

If you have concerns about your pet’s health and/or behavior, contact your animal hospital Michigan City, IN.
