Imposter Syndrome- What Is It And Do You Have It?

Do you feel like you do not deserve to be where you are in life? Do you feel that you are not experienced or qualified enough to be in your job? Do you feel like you don’t deserve to be with your partner or to have certain friends? Well, you may be dealing with Imposter Syndrome, and this is not as uncommon as you may believe.

Imposter Syndrome

Imposter Syndrome is described as the psychological experience of believing that you do not deserve your success. While Imposter Syndrome is not a diagnosable mental health condition, it is often a symptom of other conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Imposter Syndrome is a very common phenomenon, with most people experiencing it at some point in their life to varying degrees. However, it is extremely common among high achievers who do not feel they deserve their success in life.

How Do I Know If I Am Experiencing Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter Syndrome is felt in many different ways depending on the person; however, the following feelings are common signs you may be dealing with Imposter Syndrome.

· Fear of Failure — avoiding new opportunities as you don’t believe you are good enough and are scared to fail.

· Being a Perfectionist — always striving to be perfect and not being able to see past the flaws in yourself and your work.

· Overworking and over-committing — feeling that you must commit all of your energy to your work in order to meet normal expectations.

· Undermining yourself — constantly procrastinating and seeing flaws and mistakes in your work rather than taking ownership of your success and achievements.

· Being unable to accept compliments and praise — assuming people do not really mean the praise and believing that they are ‘just being nice’.

How To Overcome Imposter Syndrome With Life Resolutions

The best way to tackle Imposter Syndrome is to re your brain to focus on the good over the bad and to build up your self-confidence. This takes time but is a great way to realise your self-worth and to finally feel that you deserve your success.

We recommend you take time and reflect on why you are feeling this way, as these symptoms may be coming from an underlying mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety. Therefore, if you are struggling with Imposter Syndrome, we highly recommend that you speak to a mental health professional who can identify any other conditions that may be present and help you to overcome these self-destructive feelings.
