What Are Family Preservation Services?

ll families can go through trying times, and can experience challenges related to parenting, illness, financial hardship or more.  In trying times like these, it's very important for communities to offer families services to ensure the safety of children in the family, and to strengthen the family for the future.  These Family Preservation Services are offered by either state or local welfare agencies to help strengthen families while helping them remain together, so that children can be prevented from entering the foster care system when possible.

What is Family Preservation?

While Family Preservation Services can vary from state to state, they will usually include family therapy, parental skills training and other programs intended to help a family stay, and grow, together.  Children grow better while in a stable and supportive environment, and this is why family preservation services are so important, they allow families to grow while also staying together to support each other.  While foster care is sometimes necessary to ensure the safety of a child, any disruption to a child's life can negatively effect their growth, so keeping a family together through these challenges is extremely important.

What to Expect from Family Preservation Services

It can be very intimidating to enter into Family Preservation Services, as most people don't have an idea of what they can expect from the different programs, however most will offer some combination of:
While the programs offered will vary from different states or agencies, someone entering into Family Preservation Services can expect to go through programs similar to these.  And while scary at first it is important to remember that it is extremely important to deal with these issues together as a family so that it will be a stronger unit together in the future.

What is Conservatorship?

Sometimes families cannot remain together for various reasons while they are going through different family preservation services.  In this case a judge will assign someone to care for any children through a conservatorship.  In these circumstances the family will still go through the above-listed Family Preservation Services with some additional requirements that are decided on a case by case basis.  It is important to remember that even if a family can't remain together during hard times doesn't mean they can't come back together after going through the different Family Preservation Services they are assigned.
