Log Horizon Season 3: Everything We Know About the Anime’s Overdue Return

Starting in 2010, Log Horizon was a series of Japanese novels that were eventually adapted into a light novel series and a manga series, before finally becoming an anime in 2013. Log Horizon lasted two seasons, airing from 2013 to 2015. Despite this, the manga was produced until 2018, while the original novel series continues to this day.

Thankfully for fans, the anime is finally coming back, hoping to continue adapting the story from where the first two seasons left off. Here's a rundown on what the franchise is about, what parts of the story the first two seasons adapted, and what the third season might entail. Read more information here about this article.

What Is Log Horizon?

Like many popular anime franchises in the 2010s, Log Horizon is an isekai series, and was one of the first to ride the wave of popularity in the genre sparked by the success of Sword Art Online. The story involves a popular MMORPG called Elder Tale, which has just released its newest expansion pack.

Unfortunately, when this expansion goes live on the internet, thirty thousand Japanese gamers suddenly find themselves trapped within the game itself, now living as their in-game avatars. One of these players is Shiroe, a socially awkward outcast who now pledges to make the most of what seems to be his new life.

Log Horizon Season 1 And 2

Season 1 of the series had Shiroe teaming up with players Naotsugu and Akatsuki, as the general trappings and government of this new world were established. In finding their bearings in their new world of Akiba, the group encounters several different guilds. This inspires Shiroe to found his own guild, the eponymous Log Horizon. Together with other guilds, the Round Table Alliance is formed, determined to increase the quality of the city. From there, the history of Akiba, as well as World Class Magic, are introduced.

Unfortunately, the various adventurers getting used to their new surroundings distracts them from the ensuing threat of invading hordes of goblins and monsters. The usual heroes and Ancients of the game had seemingly disappeared in the event that trapped the players in the game, while the nobles of the Akiba fought and argued over how to deal with the situation. Thus, it fell upon the adventurers to defend the city and its non-playable character inhabitants (known as Landers). This also saw Shiroe learning various techniques, such as a high-level magic skill that was able to turn a mortal Lander into a respawnable player. While the threat of the goblins is defeated, a new foe in the form of an ultra-powerful guild named Plant Hwyaden soon makes its presence known to Akiba.

Season 2 sees Shiroe going on a quest for the source of the game's gold, seeking to use it to literally buy all of the property on the server. In doing so, he would put the game's Landers and Adventurers on equal financial footing, keeping in line with the goal of making Akiba a better world than the one he and the others came from. Akatsuki, Shiroe's servant, also develops in her own right, as without Shiroe there she is otherwise purposeless. They eventually meet the mysterious Kanami, a powerful guild leader determined to return to the real world to reunite with her daughter. The central threat of this season is the Western Empire, namely its seeming leader Nureha, whose extreme power is balanced by the mental scares received from her years of abuse in the real world. This focus on world-building and explaining how civilization is built, even if through magical means, made the series very similar to more recent shows such as Dr. Stone and That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime.

Log Horizon Season 3

The recently announced third season of Log Horizon is subtitled Fall of the Round Table, which is also the title of the 12th novel of the series' source material. The huge delay in the series' production may stem from the anime adapting more so from the light novel series, which it had caught up with by the end of the second season. Additionally, Mamare Touno, the author of the light novels, was charged with tax evasion in 2015, which held up the books' continuation. With their schedule returning to normal, however, there will be more material to pull from.

The series will likely pick up from the last's established plot thread of the invasion of the otherworldly monsters known as the Tenwazawai. This will not only drive a further rift between the East and West empires but also the Round Table Alliance that been devoted to bringing peace to Akiba. The new season is currently set to be released in Japan in October of this year, though no specific date has been given. The cast from the previous seasons will be returning, and Studio DEEN, who animated Season 2, will also be coming back to produce Season 3. Since Touno had previously planned to write at least 15 volumes of the series, there should be enough material for this season to complete the series' story.
