5 Things To Consider Before Building Your First Mobile App

We live in an age where mobile technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. Many of us are walking around with some kind of mobile device on us, whether it’s an old flip phone or an iPhone 6S Plus. The one thing that ties all these devices together is the apps that are running on them. There are over two million apps available on both the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, which means there are plenty of options to choose from when you’re deciding what your next mobile app should be.

1) What Problem Will Your App Solve?

Your first step should be to try and understand what problem your app will solve. Do you want to save time? Are you looking for ways to make things more convenient? Whatever it is, write it down because it’s important to your overall strategy.

2) Are There Competitors?

You have a great idea for an app, but what about others? Are there already similar apps in existence? If so, take a look at how they work and what makes them special. Use these ideas to help you refine your app before investing too much time and money into it.

3) Is It Scalable?

Starting a mobile app is great. However, keep in mind that even if your app idea is incredible and everyone loves it (and that’s a lot of ifs), if you don’t build it with scalability in mind, you might want to look at another option. As things grow, you can expand your reach by adding more functionality and continuing to reach larger audiences.

4) What's Your Budget?

If you’re thinking about building a mobile app for your business, or if you’ve been assigned to do so, chances are good that a sizable budget isn’t part of your plan. However, regardless of whether you have a lot of money to work with or not, developing an app takes time and effort—time that could be spent on other tasks and efforts that may end up being more worthwhile in terms of ROI.

5) How Long Will It Take To Develop An App?

Unfortunately, there’s no way to answer that without actually getting started. Estimates vary widely depending on many factors, including what type of app you want to create and how much money you’re willing to spend. A typical timeline ranges from a few months to a year or more. If you need a quick answer, let’s assume eight weeks for a small-budgeted app with only basic functionality—you might have longer if your needs are more complex or if your budget is large.
