How to Select a Word, Sentence, or Paragraph on iPhone & iPad with Gestures

Then you may want to learn how to use the text selection gestures in iOS and iPadOS, which allow you to quickly pick text on your devices for copying, cutting, editing, fixing, deleting, and other tasks. This article explains how to use gestures on the iPhone and iPad to identify specific phrases, sentences, or paragraphs.

·      Select and edit text on iPhone

On the iPhone, you can pick and edit the text in text fields using the onscreen keyboard. You may also use dictation or an external keyboard. Select and edit text

To pick text, use one of the methods below:

o  Choose a word: On one finger, double-tap.

o  Choose a phrase or a line: On one finger, triple-tap.

o  Choose a paragraph: On one finger, quadruple-tap.

o  Choose a text block: Drag to the last word after touching and holding the first word in the block.

o  Select a text block from the various choices: After touching and holding the first word in the block, drag to the last word.

o  Cut: Tap Cut or pinch closed with three fingers two times.

o  Copy: Tap Copy or pinch closed with three fingers.

o  Paste: Tap Paste or pinch open with three fingers.

o  Replace: Choose from a list of suggested replacement text or have Siri do it for you.

o  Format: Format the selected text with B/I/U.

 

·       Insert text by typing

Choose one of the following options to position the insertion point where you want to insert text:

a.   Place your cursor where you want to add text.

b.   Drag the insertion point to a new location

c.    Note: To navigate a long document, press and hold the document's right edge, then move the scrollbar to the text you want to alter.

d.   Fill in the blanks with the text you want to insert.

e.   You can also paste text that you've cut or copied from another paper. See Text selection and editing.

 

You can cut or copy something on one Apple computer and paste it on another with Universal Clipboard. Inside an app, you can also switch selected text.

●    If the text is editable, tap once to position the cursor.

●    To pick a title, tap twice.

●    To pick a phrase, tap three times.

●    To pick the entire paragraph, tap four times.
