What are the Major Causes of Bloating?

When the stomach or intestines are swelled with either fluid or gas, it is known as Bloating. This may be one of the major causes of bloating that may feel like you have eaten a big meal and there is no space for more.


You may experience stomach pain, feel tight and full. The abdomen will become swollen or distended causing a feeling of discomfort in the abdomen.


What Causes Bloating?


The reasons for stomach bloating can be eating too fast or too much at a time. Eating fatty foods which create gas in the intestinal tract. When the individual swallows air from drinking through a straw or chewing gum, or by eating too fast.


It takes 20 minutes for the stomach to send the signal to the brain that the body is full, until which you eat so much or so fast, which leads to uncomfortable bloating.


Eating foods that can cause bloating, like beans, wheat, etc. People with intestinal disorders, for example, inflammatory bowel disease, small intestinal bacterial growth, irritable bowel syndrome, often report painful bloating.


There could be medical reasons for bloating, such as Pregnancy, in which the hormones play a role in your mood and your body, due to which you crave for something which leads to bloating.


Constipation is caused by some foods, or not drinking enough water, changes in diet, or stress. It can also make you feel bloated.


A monthly period can be a reason for bloating, as some women have a condition known as Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) which can make you feel tired, irritable, achy, etc.


Celiac Disease, in which a protein – wheat, barley, ray, etc., contains gluten which attacks the lining of the intestine causing diarrhea, weight loss, lots of gas leads to bloating.


There are some eating disorders anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, in which an individual either increases or decreases their diet to the maximum or minimum which can cause harm to the body and also cause bloating.


Foods that Cause Bloating


Some foods cause gas or bloating, such as Beans, which contain high fiber and oligosaccharides which are sugars and difficult to break down.


Carbonated Beverages have high amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and are a common cause of bloating and also cause cramping.


Wheat is another common cause of bloating, as it contains a protein called gluten which causes stomach pain, diarrhea, and gas after eating.


Ray and Barley are both cereal grains, which are nutritious, rich in fiber, and are full of vitamins or minerals. High fiber and gluten is a common reason for gas in the stomach.


Onions contain fructans which also are fibers (soluble) and Garlic is a gas-producing food that also contains fructans.


Cruciferous Vegetables include cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, etc., which are very healthy but contain fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K and potassium, which can lead to bloating in some people.


Dairy Products, which include cheese, milk, yogurt, etc. Most of the world’s population can’t break lactose, the sugar found in dairy. And if you are lactose intolerant, dairy products can cause major harm to your digestive system.


Apples and pears are very popular fruits, which contain fibers, vitamin C, and antioxidants. These are known to cause bloating because they contain fruit sugar, fructose, which is difficult to digest.


Most of the time, when people feel bloated they can manage on their own. But when you feel weak, lose appetite, lose weight, have diarrheas, etc., you should contact professionals. You know what causes gas in the stomach, plan your diet carefully and you should take preventive measures so that bloating cannot harm your digestive system.
