Different Subwoofer Enclosures Offer a Variety of Sound Experiences

Subwoofers can add bass to a car stereo system as well as a heart-pounding bump. Finding the perfect subwoofer isn't the only thing that contributes to the spectacular sound. The combination of a subwoofer and a suitable enclosure box can produce a variety of sounds for a car's surround system.

A sturdy, well-built enclosure ensures optimal subwoofer performance. If the subwoofer is not properly enclosed, the full bass will not be delivered. Low frequencies emitted from the front of the speaker can be cancelled out by the sound from the back.

People can try to build their own boxes. A solid understanding of enclosure volumes and technical sound engineering is required, however. Most people who want to upgrade their car audio system should get a pre-made subwoofer enclosure.

Sealed box subwoofers are airtight and ideal for any music that requires tight, accurate bass. The response will be flat, with deep bass extension and superior power handling. They produce a precise, clean sound and can be used in a variety of settings. Sealed enclosures require more power, so a high-wattage amplifier will provide the best results.

A vent is used in ported boxes to reinforce low bass response. At any amplifier wattage, more output is produced than in a sealed box. Ported boxes are preferred for the sound of hard-driving music such as rock, heavy metal, or any other type of hard-driving music.

Less power is required, and more boom is produced, but it is more difficult to tune. A subsonic filter on the amplifier will aid in producing cleaner tones. Over sealed boxes, a deeper bass is delivered, but they must be much larger to achieve this sound.

In subwoofers, bandpass boxes provide the most slam. They are a type of ported box in which the woofer is housed within a dual-chambered box. One chamber is completely sealed, while the other is ported. The ported side emits sound waves. The sound that comes out of the port is extremely loud and has a limited frequency range.

Within that range, a bandpass box is very efficient and tends to boom. They are more audible at specific frequency ranges. A bandpass box's aggressive sound is ideal for rap, reggae, and hard rock. Some subwoofers do not work well in bandpass boxes. The specifications of the subwoofer and the bandpass box must be compared.

Subwoofers are mounted to a board attached to the rear deck in free-air subwoofer systems. They can also be stored in the trunk, next to the back seat. The trunk serves as an enclosure for the subwoofer, isolating sound from the back of the speaker and resolving sound cancellation issues in subwoofers without the need for an enclosure that takes up extra space.

Free-air systems take up less space in the car and have a consistent frequency response. The subwoofer, on the other hand, must be specifically designed for free-air use. The lack of a box makes them easier to install. Power handling is lower than in boxed counterparts.

The quality of the bass sound can make or break the stereo experience. When a subwoofer and proper enclosure are installed, audio will have depth and realism. Factory-installed subwoofers are typically too small to handle low-frequency sounds effectively. Subwoofers are available in a range of sizes ranging from eight to fifteen inches.

Component subwoofers are only available as speakers. Separately, an enclosure and an amplifier must be chosen. Some of the enclosures listed above work well with any subwoofer, but others must be custom-made. Component subwoofers are ideal for drivers who want to create a highly personalised stereo system for their vehicles.

Powered subwoofers combine the speaker and the amplifier into a single compact enclosure. These are ideal for installation in tight quarters. Vehicle-specific subwoofers are designed to fit in out-of-the-way places to save space. A subwoofer installed in the door is a good example. It's ideal for a low-key installation. Neither powered nor specific subwoofers produce a lot of bass.
