Upcoming HDMI 2.1a Adds SBTM Feature

The following year. HDMI 2.1a is expected to be announced at CES 2022 that kicks off on the 5th of January. HDMI is the most recent improved version of the accessible HDMI 2.1 standard and will include the brand new SBTM feature.

What is SBTM?

The major upgrade, SBTM (Source-Based Tone Mapping), will permit different windows to show SDR or HDR content, like picture-in-picture and window playback videos. This isn't meant to replace the well-known HDR10 and Dolby Visual effects. The SBTM function can automatically create optimized HDR signals that make more efficient usage of the HDR function of the display without having to set it manually and can boost the gaming experience on PC. SBTM removes overexposed components from the official collection, making the details clearer (displayed as shown below).

While it might sound like a promising step, concerns have been raised in some tech reviews since the group behind HDMI connection is planning to combine HDMI 2.0 with HDMI 2.0 and the HDMI 2.1 version. It could confuse when it comes to determining the compatibility of monitors. In addition, as per the guidelines that are set by the HDMI Licensing Administrator who is responsible for issuing licenses and issuing HDMI standards, when the brand new 2.1a "standard" is released and all unused ports are released, they are required to be identified as HDMI 2.1a however they are not even a single attribute in that 2.1a standard.

HDMI 2.1 VS HDMI 2.0

HDMI is one of the more popular audio and video interfaces in the audio-visual sector and covers many areas, including TV PC, TV, monitor, mobile phones, and many more. The standard for HDMI has been updated for several years from 2.0 and now 2.1. While HDMI 2.1 was released in 2017, HDMI 2.1 standard was made available in 2017 because of the low popularity of high-resolution, high-refresh video sources, televisions fitted with HDMI 2.1 weren't open until the close of 2019.

HDMI 2.1, also known as the HDMI 2.1 standard, was introduced in 2017 and is a technological standard that will allow high-end videos and audio transmission to come in the future. The most significant distinction between HDMI 2.1 with HDMI 2.0 is the bandwidth, which increased from 18 Gbps to 48 Gbps. The increased bandwidth is directly related to an improvement in the quantity of transmitted data.

Second, HDMI 2.0 cannot support an 8K video transmission. HDMI 2.1 can help not just 4K at 120Hz, but 8K with a 60Hz. HDMI 2.1 can support dynamic HDR. However, HDMI 2.0 only supports static HDR. Additionally, HDMI 2.1 supports VRR (variable refresh rate). In games, you can reduce or eliminate screen delays, tearing, and stuttering to provide smoother and more precise details.

Additionally, HDMI 2.1 supports ALLM (automatic low latency mode). In the way that is automatic low-latency, smart TV owners don't have to change the low-latency mode by hand according to the contents of the TV. They will nevertheless automatically activate or disable the low-latency mode based on the contents of the TV. You can enjoy smooth, non-stutter uninterrupted viewing and interactions.
