In this article, we are going to understand why your dog may be drooling more than usual and, in the process of learning the cause and the aspects associated with it, we are also going to prescribe some essential remedies to stop or at least reduce the effects of the same.

Oral hygiene issue:

Just like human beings canines are subject to the issues of bad oral hygiene as well. for instance, they can also have tartar build-up inside their mouth, on their teeth, and under their gums. It can lead to discolouring of teeth (usually turns red in the case of canines) and bleeding gums. And of these many issues of bad gums, one issue, in particular, is drooling. Yes, this bad oral hygiene which can lead to tartar formation in your canine, can also lead to excessive drooling in the dog. So, the presence of tartar can lead to both periodontal diseases and excessive drooling. To deal with the drooling caused by poor hygiene, ensure that the dog has sufficient dental chews and make sure that you try and rinse his mouth every day properly. Sometimes, if the issues do not stop or lead to infection of the gums, it can lead to ulcers. Hence, the moment you suspect or witness unprecedented and heavy drooling from the canine, the first thing that you need to do is take him/her to the vet who can properly conduct an inspection and determine the course of action to mitigate the issue.

Canine Anxiety:

The medical term used to describe excessive drooling is called hypersalivation. It is to be noted that hypersalivation is a physical manifestation of severe psychological conditions. This can easily involve some form of fear and anxiety. And it isn’t too hard to figure that out. The following example will help you understand-

Suppose you notice that your dog is drooling a lot when he/she is up for a ride in the car. And if the drooling is unnatural (as in, it does not happen in any other circumstances), then there is a possibility that the dog has anxiety about rides, more specifically car rides. Sometimes, your canine can develop separation anxiety, should one or more of the members of the family are absent or leave, for a longer time. It is precisely in this context that we can take into account holistic treatment for dog drooling. While it is true that we cannot be present in the house all the time, we surely can do something about the anxiety of the dog and help mitigate the same.
