Alignment of values and purpose

Let's discuss values and purpose a bit more. These should not be dismissed as merely buzzwords. Values can be described as the foundation on which an individual's work behavior is based. There will be problems if their values are not in line with your business'.

You run the risk that decision-making and motivators will pull you in another direction if your personal purpose is not tied to the business.

An employee who works only for the pay is the best example of this misalignment. While they have the skills and knowledge to perform their job, they are not invested in the company's larger vision or purpose. This could lead to a total lack of revenue. Money is a motivator that's fine and should not be discredited. If money is the only motivator in a team or business, it's possible to expect a volatile situation.

Teams create great products more often than individuals

Good culture helps teams build trust, cooperation and friendship. A team of talented people will be able to find the root cause of technical problems quicker and can combine their brainpower to create something better than what any one individual could have created. Each person joining the team should complement and not try to replace existing skills. Tech teams benefit from each other's collaboration. We have seen many of our candidates improve their skills quickly after being part of talented IT professionals.

A poor attitude can cost a business

This is a person in an organization that has lots of talent but has a disliked personality. Although the Brilliant Jerk may be attractive for companies with skills gaps in certain areas, it can also pose a risk to existing teams by introducing a difficult personality. The staff may become disengaged and lose their ability to contribute. Worse, your most talented employees may leave the company. All this to fill your skills gap with the best qualified candidate. Would you prefer 5 or 1 great person?

Many cases of "The Brilliant Jerk" may reflect a more extrovertible, A-type approach to work than the presence of subdued, but still talented employees. In other cases, however, they can bring a lot of expertise to the company. Businesses need to take the time to assess how this attitude can be changed. Many brilliant jerks are actually good people who have simply fallen into the role that is necessary to survive. These people can be pulled out of their beliefs and allowed to work in a collaborative, positive environment.
