Instagram Uses Video Selfies to Make the Platform More Secure Against Bots

Instagram is introducing a new video selfie system to make the platform more secure against bot accounts. In its initial days, it is being used for the new accounts. Like other platforms, there are multiple fake accounts on Instagram as well. To make the platform more secure against spam and bot accounts, Instagram will take your selfie before you log in to the platform. Keep reading to know what changes Instagram is rolling out now.

How were you logging into Instagram before a video selfie?

Well, like other social media platforms, Instagram uses a username and password system. Further, it asks for the user’s birthday to find whether they are eligible to use the platform or not. However, two-factor authentication is optional here.

Moreover, Instagram allows users to create multiple Instagram accounts with different email IDs. You can consider this step reasonable to a certain level as the chance of creating fake accounts and spam cases also increases at the same rate.

Further, stopping spam and bot accounts is quite challenging, and it happens on other social media as well.

A Report from XDA developers

As per XDA developer Matt Navarra (a UK-based social media consultant) has announced a new feature of Instagram on Twitter. He said Instagram is rolling out a new video selfie system to log in to the platform. The video selfie identification will help in confirming the human users. Further, he noted that the platform would not misuse the biometric data and delete it after 30 days. Moreover, he added that the platform would take video selfies for new account sign-ups, and currently, the old accounts needn’t do it.

How reliable is it?

The primary goal of the video selfie is to stop spam and bot accounts on the platform. The users’ information (biometric data) is entirely safe as the platform won’t misuse your data. It would delete the users’ video selfies after 30 days. However, merely saying can’t prevent hackers from obtaining your data. Here the users should know how secure and reliable is video selfie system? Some other platforms already use biometric systems; however, they get easily fooled by pictures and videos and unlock the system. No one can tell right now how secure is Instagram’s video selfie feature. Some platforms have been using photo verification systems for around ten years now, and we can say video selfie is a way better step than photo verification systems.

The video selfie system was trialed last year; however, it was stopped later due to technical issues. Instagram has been working to solve the technical problems and make it more secure way. Here Instagram will use an AI algorithm to find whether the user is a human or not.

We hope the system will work to make Instagram more secure. Further news updates will let us know how safe it is.
