Wantage is a market town and civil parish in the Vale of the White Horse, Oxford shire, England. It is about 12 miles (19 km) east of Oxford and 9 miles (14 km) west of Abingdon. The 2011 Census recorded the parish’s population as 7,898. Wantage is a city in the county of Oxford shire, England. The city is located on the River Thames, about 20 miles southwest of Oxford. Wantage was first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the year 871, when it was recorded as being under the control of the West Saxon king Alfred the Great. Wantage became a municipal borough in 1894 and was granted city status in 1958. The Wantage Canal, which connects the Thames to the Grand Union Canal, was opened in 1802.
