Three Ways to Give Sadqah and Zakat Online

As with any other form of charity, it is now possible to give zakat and sadqah in many ways. Those with eligible means who practice Islam are required to donate 2.5% of their income in the form of zakat, while also encouraged to give additional voluntary donations known as sadqah if they are able. Zakat-eligible donations still fall under eight categories, however the way in which the zakat is administered is not as limited. Sadqah donations are more flexible and can vary from doing a favor or wishing someone a nice day to providing compassion or assistance to someone in need. Below are three ways you can give sadqah or zakat online.

Donate to a Person in Need

There are stricter rules about who is eligible to receive zakat, but you cannot go wrong by donating money, clothes or goods to a person in need. This person can live anywhere in the world, but they cannot be a relative. To donate to an individual directly, you can look at crowdfunding charity sites to find someone who would benefit from your donation. This might be someone who is raising money for a lifesaving surgery, someone who was affected by a natural disaster, or someone looking to pay off a large amount of debt. When you give zakat online, you are not limited to helping those in your immediate community. This can be beneficial if you live in an area that is not majority Muslim, or if you want to help someone in a Muslim majority country.

Donate to an Organization

While the rules surrounding zakat indicate that it should be given to individuals, one exception is that of a zakat administrator. This individual or organization may not be eligible for zakat themselves, but they can administer it to those who are on your behalf. Such examples would be an organization that uses funds to provide food, water, shelter, or medical services to Muslim majority communities in developing nations. These organizations may be better organized to affect bigger change in a community by pooling these donations together. When researching charities online, be sure to check that they are qualified to receive zakat. If you’re not sure, you can always give sadqah to support these organizations instead.

Buy Items from a Wishlist

Not everyone likes to give zakat or sadqah in the form of money. They would rather buy goods that the person or organization needs. In these instances, you can look for wishlists set up by charities and individuals that contain items you can purchase online. In this way, you can decide how much you want to spend and browse to determine which items might be of the highest priority. Examples of wishlist items you may come across are diapers and formula for families or orphanages, canned food for a shelter, personal protective equipment (PPE) for a free clinic, school supplies, clothing, and so much more. Buying items from a wishlist is a great way to give sadqah online since you can choose items that fit within your budget.
