The Surface Dock is a unique accessory that allows you to convert your tablet into a computer.

All included are two high-definition video connectors, a gigabit Ethernet port, four USB 3.0 connections, and audio output. In other words, you have all of the necessary connections.

Unfortunately, making use of the Surface Dock isn’t always simple. Users are forced to remove and re-plug their peripherals when the gadget faults.

Troubleshooting instructions for the Surface Dock

The troubleshooting procedures for Surface Book, Surface Pro 4, and Surface Pro 3 are as follows.

Solution 1: Update your Surface Dock

To install the latest Surface Dock updates, download and run the Surface Updater program. The tool is available for download on Microsoft’s website.

Solution 2: Make sure your computer is up to date

Make sure your PC has the most recent Windows and Surface updates installed. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Check for updates to install the most recent OS updates.

Solution 3: Resolve difficulties with the keyboard and mouse

First, turn on your Surface device and wait for the login screen to display.

Connect your device to the Surface Dock > your keyboard and mouse should now work.

Solution 4: To fix display issues, clear your display cache

If your external monitor linked to your Surface Dock isn’t working, try emptying the display cache:

  1. Connect your Surface to the Surface Dock and turn it off.
  2. Open the Surface Dock registry file that you downloaded.
  3. Select surface dock registry.reg and run it.
  4. To allow modifications to your Surface, select Yes > OK.
  5. Connect your Surface to the Surface Dock and test your external display after restarting your Surface.

Solution 5: Restart the docking station and monitor

If your external display still doesn’t work, try resetting it together with the dock:

  1. Remove the Surface Connector and re-plug it into your Surface.
  2. Unplug your Surface Dock from the wall outlet and then re-plug it.
  3. Unplug your monitor from the wall outlet and then re-plug it.
