How Do Press Punch Dies Work & Its Types?

Punches are simple devices that a punch press drives into a material, usually sheet metal, to create quick, precise holes. Punches are frequently made from carbides or tool steel. Mechanically operated presses are the most common, but simple manual punches are also used. Die sets are usually customized to the particular object being produced. If cutting a certain sort of raw material manually is too onerous, a punch press may be utilized.

Manufacturers employ a variety of tools to handle and turn raw materials into finished products, including press punch dies. This large, powerful machine can quickly cut through tough materials, including metal, and leave holes in the same shape as the punch press die. Let's take a closer look at press punch dies.

Workings of Press Punch Dies

A punch press is a large piece of machinery with a hydraulic ram at the top. A single worker can normally operate the ram from a front-facing workstation. When the worker contacts the ram, the workpiece is crushed against a fixed, stationary die. This results in a hole in the workpiece and a new object with the same shape as the die.

Punch presses are particularly useful for mass-producing small items from uniformly shaped raw materials. Even if a worker can punch holes in workpieces manually, a punch press is a more efficient and speedier method.

Types of Press Punch Dies & its Functions

Press Punch with CNC Control

While few companies still use manually operated punch presses, the bulk now use CNC punch dies. CNC-controlled punch presses employ the same hydraulic ram to punch pre-shaped holes in workpieces. On the other hand, CNC-controlled punch presses are semi-automated and controlled by a computer.

Like other CNC-controlled devices, press punch dies allow firms to streamline their production operations. Instead of manually operating a punch press, manufacturers can program it to run automatically. Although CNC-controlled punch presses still require some human interaction, they are capable of automating a wide range of processes that would otherwise require human intervention.

Punch with a Mechanical Press

In addition to hydraulic punch presses, mechanical press punch dies are available. There are two types of mechanical punch presses: complete revolution and part revolution. Part revolution punch presses only require a piece of the crankshaft to rotate, whereas full revolution punch presses require the crankshaft to rotate completely.

Punching Hydraulic Press

Hydraulic press punch dies drive the ram with a hydraulic cylinder rather than a flywheel, and they can be valve controlled or valve and feedback controlled. Valve-controlled machines typically allow for a single stroke operation, allowing the ram to respond to commands by moving up and down.

Using controlled feedback mechanisms, the ram can be proportionally modulated to within predetermined points. Because the ram no longer has to complete a full stroke up and down, it can instead function within a very tight stroke window; it has better control over its stroke and improves punching rates.

Press Punch Dies Sets

Press punch dies sets are essential for punch presses to complete their intended punching operations. There are male and female dies in a die set. One of these dies is positioned above the workpiece, while the other is positioned beneath it.

Conclusion

Punch presses are large machines with a 'C' frame. The hydraulic ram is positioned at the C type's uppermost part, while the portal frame is fashioned like a complete circle, with the ram cantered within the frame to prevent frame deflection or distortion. By forcing the punch through the die, the hydraulic-powered raw makes a hole in the workpiece.
