The Lightning Rag Dog

Before adopting, you have to be certain of what you’re looking for in a dog, and this will help you make informed decisions. The dog in view today is renowned for its versatility and hardworking nature while maintaining such an adorable pup face. The essence of this article is to give detailed information on the Whippet breed to help you ascertain whether you indeed want to be a parent to this unique canine.

Introduction

The Whippet breed is a canine that has been held dearly for centuries. Initially, they were used primarily for hunting, but over the years, they have found their niche in sporting activities due to their impressive agility. The Whippet breed can also serve as an in-house dog because of its serene and intelligent attributes, making them a favorite hound to different families.

History

The History of the Whippet breed can be traced as far back as the 18th century in England. They were viewed as a low-budget smaller Greyhound brought about by cross-breeding. Over the years, the Whippet breed dogs have stamped their authority by combining their speed, and intelligence inherited from the Greyhound and Terrier dog breeds to single them out as one of the elite dogs today.

Physical Characteristics of a Whippet Breed

This stylishly looking dog has some admirable features. Although most times they are confused for their ancestral fathers(the Greyhound breed), they do differ in some features. They possess a slim, smaller, and less fibrously defined body, huge bright eyes, silky single-coated body, and folded ears flanked at each side of the face. They are average in height, lowered chest, slender legs, and slim waist capped off with an impressive elongated neck.

Size and Weight

When adopting a Whippet breed, you need not worry about creating too much room because the dog is not a very large breed and can conveniently co-exist in medium spaces. The male breeds have an average height of 20.5 inches, while the female breed has an estimated height of 19.5. The male breeds are also significantly heavier than the females weighing between the range of 32 to 36 pounds, while the female breed weighs roughly 30 pounds. The Whippet breed attains maturity in a year and two months.

Colors and Patterns

Due to their diverse color tones, patterns, presentations, and combinations, the American Kennel Club could not arrive at Standard Whippet colors, but the most common ones include:

  • White
  • Black
  • Tan
  • Orange
  • Silver
  • Blue
  • Fawn
  • Grey
  • Brown
  • Sun.

And markings such as:

  • Masks
  • Brindle
  • Saddle
  • Sibling
  • White trim
  • Watermarking

Shedding Habits

Whippet breeds are very low shredders that shred annually, usually in the springtime and autumn seasons.

Life Span

Whippet breeds live longer than most dog breeds, up to 16 years, depending on proper attention, nutrition, and care to prove their quality of life.
