At the origin of the living net, a simple and proven system: marine knots. Economical and resistant, the rope has always been useful on boats, to make a hammock or constitute a protective net. The most obvious illustration being the nets of catamarans.
Today, the system has entered the homes of earthlings and has been perfected. It has several advantages, depending on its type of use:
• the horizontal net allows you to replace a floor and serves at the same time as a daybed, and additional protection in the event of a mezzanine, half-floor, or near a staircase. The net can be hung inside or even outside: under a tree in a garden, hammock style, or near a swimming pool...
• the vertical net will act as a guardrail, and can be installed in a tailor-made way, even on a complicated surface.
In all cases, the residential net proves to be a relatively economical and easily modular arrangement.
Its total price, depending on the shape and finishes chosen, rarely exceeds 5,000 euros, and can be very inexpensive if you install it yourself. For those who prefer to leave it to the men of the art, some suppliers offer to install it.
Installation is quick, and if the structures receiving the fit-out comply with safety requirements, it will be done in a day's time.
Installing a home net requires following certain rules
These technical rules, but also common sense, will be reminded to you by any serious supplier. If no information or vague answers, do not hesitate to move on.
In any case, be aware that the main safety rules, to be adjusted according to the material chosen, will be assessed as follows:
• A residential net is installed on a solid fixing, as for a floor: beams, or stones (not friable), or steel structures such as IPNs.
• It is necessary to create a relatively limited surface, to avoid the risks of deformation inherent in the textile: maximum 16 to 20 m2 in total.
• It is necessary to install enough hanging systems on the wall: 6 to 7 hooks are required every linear meter.
• You must not exceed the maximum number of simultaneous people on the equipment, information which will be indicated to you by the manufacturer (often 3 or even 4 people for the most resistant nets). If a custom-made net is purchased, the resistance will depend on the material used, expressed in kg/m2. A serious supplier will spontaneously indicate this on his product.
• He does not jump on the net: explain well beforehand to his children that it is not a trampoline...
• Finally, you will choose a net with a thick rope for horizontal nets (minimum 1 cm in diameter for the rope). Also prefer a tight mesh, which will be more resistant and more comfortable in use.
