6 Tips For Changing & Cleaning Your Ostomy Bag

Some ostomates have difficulty adjusting to life with a stoma. It is not always easy to do when resources are limited and a lack of experience with ostomy care. The following are tips on emptying and cleaning your ostomy bag efficiently.

  1. Ensure to always have a new ostomy bag and wafer on hand. Use toilet paper, a clean cloth or wipes to clean the bag. It is also best to always have a toilet seat cover in your ostomy care pouch when you are going out.
  2. Do not use toilet paper excessively since this may cause your ostomy bag to overflow and leak. Also, avoid getting toilet water on yourself or your clothes.
  3. Clean your ostomy bag exit with toilet paper or a dry towel to prevent soiling your abdomen and hands.
  4. Place an adequate container beneath the ostomy bag outlet if you are measuring bag content. Slide your fingers down until the stool comes out of the ostomy bag while holding the bag between your index and middle fingers. After quantifying, pour the contents into the toilet, clean the container, and store it.
  5. Fill the ostomy bag roughly one-third full of water and gently swirl it. Rinse once or twice with water. Before applying deodorant, wipe the interior of the ostomy bag with toilet paper.
  6. Seal your ostomy bag again after wiping the pouch outlet with toilet paper or a clean towel. Filling the bag with air typically leads to leakage and extra cleaning.

When should you change your pouching system?

Specific periods of the day may have less bowel motion, and these are the best times to change your ostomy or urine bag. Different pouching systems last for varying amounts of time. Your ostomy output may be weak and watery immediately following surgery. However, as it thickens, you will better determine the optimal moments to change your ostomy or urine bag system.
