How To Prevent Knee Injuries?

The knee is one of the most stressed joints and the most prone to recurrent pain and injury. Sylvain Ollet, a sports coach in Bordeaux, gives us his advice on bodybuilding exercises to strengthen the knees!

Many of you suffer from joint pain, especially in the knee. This joint is used on a daily basis when walking, sitting down, getting up, and even more so if you practice a sport regularly.

“The causes of pain can be various, like inflammation, osteoarthritis, trauma, etc. Strengthening this joint with the help of a professional elastic bandage can, in many situations, limit or even avoid injuries.”

We asked Sylvain Ollet, sports coach in Bordeaux and member of the Bordeaux Personal Sport Trainer network, for advice on how to get stronger and more resistant knees.

How Does The Knee Joint Work?

The knee is a joint that provides the junction between the leg and the thigh. It connects the femur to the tibia and fibula. This set is associated with a small bone, the patella.

Unlike other joints in the body, the knee joint is solely stabilized by ligaments and muscles. When it starts moving, the knee becomes mobile, flexible and resistant, allowing, among other things, to support the weight of our body.

Premature wear or trauma can jeopardize the health of the knee. To limit this risk of injury, it is therefore important to strengthen the muscles around it.

What Are The Exercises To Strengthen The Knee Joint?

Several exercises will allow you to strengthen the knee, especially if it is regularly used and if muscle imbalances occur. The movements presented here involve the extensor muscles (quadriceps) as well as the flexor muscles of the knee (hamstrings).

Injuries are often linked to an imbalance between these two muscle groups. Indeed, in the majority of cases, the quadriceps are much stronger than the hamstrings. It is therefore essential to further strengthen them.
