Education is essential and fundamental for attaining unlimited human potential, developing and enhancing an equitable fair-minded society, and encouraging national development. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, aims to provide high-quality education to all, and for this, changes are made to the National Policy on Education.

Our country is about to bring incredible changes to its old education system to emerge as a Global Superpower. The conversion or changes are made to the old education policy to put a full stop to the 34-years old education system and introduce the new education system. Let us discuss in detail the New Education Policy 2021.

What is the New Education Policy?

NEP, or the National Education Policy 2020, was announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) under the supervision and guidance of the Prime Minister of India. The New Education Policy was sanctioned on 29th July 2020 by the Union Cabinet of India, which replaced the previous National Policy on Education (NPE), which was approved and came to effect in 1986. The main aim of NEP 2020 is to enhance the quality of education by revamping the old Indian education system.

The policy allows the Indian education system to follow a plan that fosters the education system from human development to selection and sorting, allowing students to reach their true potential. NEP put forward various changes and reformations to create an equitable society of tomorrow.

Let us know about the new educational structure introduced in India through the New Education Policy 2021.

New Curricular and Pedagogical Structure (5+3+3+4)

The New Education Policy 2020 has brought up a new education structure which is in progress and will soon replace the existing education system (10+2). The New Education Policy brings a new 5+3+3+4 curricular and pedagogical structure. Under this formula, the first five years of education will focus on foundational learning, followed by three years of preparatory schooling, three years of middle-stage learning, and the leftover four years of secondary education.

The 5+3+3+4 education plan is a significant change to the existing education system in India that will expose students to a well-managed and fun learning experience at schools. As a result, students will be able to spend more time in school, but the number of years spent in each education stage will be reduced. Here are the four stages of the New Education Policy 2021:

Foundational Stage (5 Years): The Foundational Stage in the new education structure will be made of the first five years of a child's education. In the first three years, children will be taught in Community-based nurseries, Balvatikas, or Anganwadis. The remaining two years of schooling, which includes play or activity-based learning, will allow students to acquire the knowledge and skills required for further education.

Preparatory Stage (3 years): Students between eight and eleven years will be included in the preliminary stage to focus on foundational learning, including basic skills like numeracy and literacy.

Middle Stage (3 years): The middle stage will include students aged eleven to fourteen. Throughout this stage, students will be encouraged to learn fundamental academic skills like reading, writing, etc.

Secondary Stage (4 years): The secondary stage comprises students aged from 14 to 18 years. During this stage, students will be expected to study core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. Moreover, students will also be able to have the opportunity to select and decide from a wide variety of optional subjects or electives, like languages, arts, and many more.

The secondary stage is four years, which aims to offer students the necessary skills and in-depth understanding they will need to pursue higher education or set foot in the workforce.

Conclusion

The New Education Policy 2021 has significantly impacted the entire education system in India, and the changed system has created an immense buzz among schools and education centres. The policy is a comprehensive framework for primary education to higher education in urban and rural areas. The New Education Policy 2021 also has the vision to refurbish or transform India's current education system or model by 2030.
