Eight teams have ruled out this year's FIFA World Cup 2022

From Italy to Egypt, here are eight teams that ruled out a place in the FIFA World Cup 2022. Even before the Qatar World Cup kicks off for the first time in 2022, fans who haven’t followed the tournament’s qualifiers will be in for a shock: Current European champion and four-time World Cup winner Italy will not play. Qatar World Cup 2022 fans can buy Football World Cup Tickets from our website.

While the team’s failure to qualify was a bit of a shame, it’s not the only big name missing from Qatar’s 2022 roster.

A number of other large teams from Europe, South America and Africa are also watching from home.

Here are some planes not flying to Qatar in November:

Italy

Ranking: 6

Best Performance at World Cup: Winner (1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006)

In the semi-finals of the March play-off, Italy missed a chance to secure a place after losing to North Macedonia in the 92nd minute. The fact that they are in the playoffs is also surprising given their triumph at Euro 2020 last year and a string of good results in the preliminary rounds of the tournament.

However, in the next five games, they won only once and tied four. Second behind Switzerland took them to the playoffs, where they failed to score and missed the World Cup for the second time in a row.

Colombia

Ranking: 17

Best Performance at World Cup: Quarter Finals (2014)

Colombia, with former World Cup Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez and a stellar performance at the past two World Cups, are among the favourites to secure a place at the Qatar Football World Cup 2022.

The South American team finished sixth in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, behind Peru. Which secured a playoff spot after the top four teams qualified automatically.

Rodriguez, who played club football in Qatar for a year, shared his disappointment, saying he was “deeply saddened” in a lengthy social media post after his team failed to qualify.

Chile

Ranking: 29

Best Performance at World Cup: 3rd place (1962)

Chile has been participating in the Football World Cup since the first World Cup in 1930. They hosted the World Cup in 1962 and finished third.

In the last few editions (1998, 2010 and 2014), Chile reached the round of 16. Those performances were accompanied by players such as Arturo Vidal, Gary Medal and Alexis Sanchez. With these players declining, it is difficult for Chile to get good results.

They only won one of their last four qualifying matches in Qatar 2022. Chile then attempted to disqualify Ecuador because Ecuador’s Byron Castillo is Colombian and ineligible to represent Ecuador.

However, FIFA has stated that the player has permanent Ecuadorian nationality and is legally eligible to represent the country. FIFA World Cup 2022 fans can buy Qatar FIFA World Cup Tickets from our website.

Sweden

Ranking: 20

Best Performance at World Cup: Runner-up (1958)

Sweden has participated in 12 of the 21 World Cups. The country hosted the tournament in 1958 when the team reached the final and lost another high-scoring match for their best result. Brazil.

The 2018 quarter-finalists’ journey to Qatar was derailed after they lost three of their six matches in the second leg of last year’s qualifiers. They are second in the group stage behind Spain and face Poland in the playoffs.

The play-offs took place in Poland and the home side took full advantage of their support to win 2-0, ending the young Swedish side’s dream of moving to Qatar.

Nigeria

Ranking: 31

Best Performance at World Cup: Round of 16 (1994, 1998, 2014)

Nigeria made their World Cup debut in 1994 and was an instant hit with fans for their attacking style and fun goal celebrations.

The Super Eagles topped the group stage but were eliminated in the round of 16 after a stunning comeback from Roberto Baggio’s Italy.

Since then, the Super Eagles have only ruled out the 2006 tournament. Before making a comeback at the World Cup in South Africa four years later.

This time, Nigeria’s dreams of playing for a horde of Nigerian ex-pats were dashed when they tied with Ghana in the playoffs. In the return leg, Ghana qualified with an away goal for Qatar.

Egypt

Ranking: 40

Best Performance at World Cup: Group Stage (1934, 1990, 2018)

With the World Cup in the Middle East, Mohamed Salah at the head of the team and Qatar’s large ex-pat population. Egypt would have had a chance to qualify for the 2022 tournament.

However, when Egypt drew Senegal in the playoffs, their biggest star, Salah, missed the penalty along with the other two.

Egypt has failed the group stage in all three World Cups they have played in. The end of 2018 was disappointing as Salah was unable to fully recover from a shoulder injury.

Russia

Ranking: 35

Best Performance at World Cup: Quarter Finals (2018), 4th Place (1966 as the Soviet Union)

The only politically enforced expulsion from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Russia. After Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, FIFA announced it would remove the team from all competitions. Qatar IFA World Cup fans can buy FIFA World Cup Tickets from our website.

Russia is one of the favourites to qualify from Europe and reach the quarter-finals in 2018. Russia appealed the ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but it was later withdrawn.

The team’s history at the World Cup has been split in two. First as the Soviet Union Championship until 1990. Russia later qualified for three World Cups until 2014 before hosting the 2018 World Cup, but they were eliminated on penalties.

Algeria

Ranking: 37

Best Performance at World Cup: Round of 16 (2014)

It was one of the most dramatic endings to World Cup qualifiers and one that shocked the world.

Algeria reached the brink of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a late extra-time win over Cameroon.

However, Karl Toko Ekambi scored seconds before the final whistle and booked his team’s place based on the away goals rule.

Algeria head coach Djamel Belmadi was shocked and heartbroken as Cameroon celebrated its return to the World Cup.

What happened? FIFA has announced that it will make payments totalling nearly £190 million through its Club Benefit Scheme to clubs around the world that will participate in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

What they say: A statement read: “As part of recognizing the commitment of football clubs to contribute to the success of the FIFA World Cup, FIFA has today begun the application process for its Club Benefit Scheme, which will cost €2.09 billion assigned to clubs around the world.”

The bigger picture: they say clubs can earn around $10,000 for each day the affected players remain on the national team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup and during official preparations. Which equates to less than £9,000 in writing time. All clubs for which the player has played in the first two years of the match will be compensated.
