Using safety pins for Ihram

According to Sharia, it is valid to use safety pins for Ihram. The minimum punishment found in the state of Ihram is covering a part of the body that cannot be covered, such as the face, which necessitates atonement. When at least a quarter of that body part is covered, this occurs. In the case of a safety pin, this won’t even constitute a violation of Ihram and can be done without facing any penalty.

Before assuming the state of Ihram, men should remove any clothing that has been stitched or made to fit the shape of their bodies, such as shirts, underwear, and trousers.

The Ihram attire is made up of two white, plain pieces of clothing called the Rida (upper garment) and Izar (lower garment). The heel and ankle bones must not be covered by sandals or shoes, whether they are sewn or unstitched.

Women are not bound to any strict dress code and are free to dress in whatever they like. The clothing should be traditional Islamic simplicity with a head covering of any colour. Socks are accepted but the hands and faces are not covered.

Even though covering the face is prohibited in Ihram, using a cloth that hangs over it without touching it is permissible.



Ihram is one of the fundamental rituals of Hajj and Umrah. Pilgrims must attain this holy state before crossing the specified Miqat. Many things are forbidden in the state of Ihram, like smoking and hunting.
