What Does Laser Eye Surgery Do?

LASIK (Laser in Situ Keratomileusis) is the process of reshaping the cornea of the patient by utilizing a laser below the corneal flap. It uses a highly advanced type of laser that corrects the refractive errors and enhances the vision of the patient—reducing the need to wear contact lenses and glasses. This procedure changes the shape of the cornea which is the transparent part that covers our eye.

How Does Laser Eye Surgery in Calgary Work?

Laser eye surgery is intended for adults who are 18 and above. It is a pain-free treatment and may take about 15 minutes as long as there are no complications. You will immediately notice the significant improvement in your vision after the surgery. Over the next few days, the enhancement in your eye function will continue until it stabilizes.

What Does This Procedure Involve?

There are various types of laser eye surgery; LASIK is probably the most common type. Usually, the doctor will use the term LASIK to refer to a range of laser surgeries in Calgary. Other types of laser surgery are SMILE, wherein the doctor will reshape the cornea through a tiny self-sealing hole, and Surface Laser procedure where the surgeon will remove the clear skin that covers the cornea. All of them should produce the same desired result. During your appointment, the doctor should walk you through your different options and help you choose the treatment option that is suitable for your situation, condition, and budget.

Why Do You Need it?

You might ask your eye surgeons in Calgary to perform laser surgery if you have the following vision problems.

• Astigmatism- In this condition, the cornea of the patient is flattening or curving unevenly. It can disrupt the typical focus when looking at something distant or near.

• Hyperopia or Farsightedness- People with this problem will have shorter eyeballs than the average. Their cornea curves can be flat, and the light focuses on the back of the retina rather than directly on it. It will result in blurry vision up close.

• Myopia or Nearsightedness- This is the condition where you have clear vision of nearby objects. However, objects in the distance will appear to be blurry. Individuals who have this vision problem will have longer eyeballs compared to what is considered normal. The cornea curves are also sharper, causing the light to focus in front of the retina.

What Are the Risks?

Most people who will go through laser eye surgery in Calgary will have positive results. Around 1/10 patients will need to go through multiple surgeries to enjoy the best results. There should be no additional charges for this. Some of the most common complications that may occur are:

• Red Marks- You may notice a red mark on the white part of your eye. You should not be worried about this since it will disappear after about a month or so.

• Visual Problems- This will usually resolve on its own, or the doctor can treat this quickly.

• Discomfort- It is only natural that you will experience some forms of distress after the procedure. If you are feeling irritated, use artificial tears to ease your discomfort. You should be able to feel comfortable after about three months.

When we were younger, our eye’s natural lens could change its power and shape. It allowed us to have a better view of things, whether the object is near or in the distance. However, as we age, the lens will become stiffer. We will gradually lose the ability to change the shape of it. With the help of your eye surgeons in Calgary, they will be able to correct your vision problems.
